Super Cheap Flights to Perth from Melbourne for Grand Final Long Weekend?

If it comes to be that both Perth teams make it to the AFL Grand final, will the airlines put on loads of extra flights for them? And if they do will it be an opportunity to ride home the empty planes for next to nothing?.. or will the planes stay on the grounds in Melbourne for a couple of days.

  • If both WA teams make the Grand Final then my guess is that they will put on extra flights from PER-MEL, but they probably won't sell super cheap seats for you to go in the opposite direction, probably close to normal price. I think you're assuming that additional planes will need to go over or go back empty from Melbourne. Who knows how the airlines would manage it logistically, but I would think most of the planes will NOT come from Melbourne. The teams themselves will probably charter a plane each. Even if that plane is going over to Perth from Melbourne nearly empty I don't think they will sell any seats. Maybe be bold and tweet the Airline CEOs to find out if they can do you a favour?

The airlines did put on extra flights from NZ when the 2015 Cricket world cup final was happening…

Anyways, I could be wrong. Would be interesting to see.

Edit: Just found this article which confirms that they have already scheduled extra flights:

    • And as it's unlikely Jetstar or Tiger will have any spare planes sitting about it's probably only going to be Virgin and Qantas that will have the spare metal to add extra capacity. Who knows, maybe we might see an A380 on a domestic route!

  • Hey I may have to eat humble pie as they do have some cheap flights!
