Toy Car Customisation

Not really sure if this belongs here, but here it is.

For the toy car collectors (Hotwheels and the like), what do you do with the cars you buy?

Are you the type to buy and:
Keep them unopened on display?
Open them and put them on display?
Pull them apart and customize them?
Open them to play with?

Just wanting to get a feel of what everyone does.
I personally have a stash that I haven't opened, opened a few from a while ago (was taking up to much space), and also tried to customize them but that didn't work out to well.

  • I bought a Hot Wheels a couple of years ago, simply because it's based on a car I own. It was from a discount store ($2) and there were several of the same that I could choose from. I chose what I considered the "best" of this particular model.

Fast-forward to 2015. A few months ago I was looking at eBay listings for the same item. $15 posted minimum.

Kicking myself for not stocking up.

    • Yeah some of them do fetch a fair bit back. Just hard to tell sometimes which ones they are. Some are more easier to notice like the ones themed towards movies and what not.

      • The tip you always hear on Bargain Hunt, Antiques Roadshow etc is "Don't be too concerned about values, just buy what you like".
So a few years ago, I did just that.

On Gumtree, an Ebbro 1/43 car modded with bigger wheels. Paypal and received it in the mail (thankfully an honest guy). It was cheap, like 25-33% the cost of a brand new one.
Only problem is, I hate the wheels. They're scale equivalents of 19" and the tyres are also too wide.

I can get aftermarket wheels on eBay but anything decent costs more than the damn car!
