Red Wine Recommendation - Under $100 and from 2008

Hey all,

Got an engagement party coming up and I wanted to gift the couple a bottle of red from the year they met.
Any ideas? I'm not a wine drinker so it's all a bit up in the air, and I've got just under two weeks so I'm looking at Dan Murphys/Liquourland/Cellar Masters or whatever.

Thanks!

  • You should be able to find a St Hugo cab sav from that year that is a very nice premium wine, but that is just one example (we opened on the other day, so I can attest to it!)
Dan Murphy's has a selection of cellared wines, so you will have other choices too. If you go to the store one of the staff will be able to give you guidance.

  • Poor Man's Grange, a touch over budget.

I personally would take the slightly cheaper option - but it's a personal taste preference.

  • Thinking of 2008 wines that are easy to buy at DM's … can get cheaper elsewhere.
The Euphonium above is a good call, maybe also any of:

Katnook Estate Odyssey Cabernet Sauvignon about $90 at DM's
pay the extra $30 and get Grant Burge Mesach 2008 ($130 at DM's)
    Wendouree Cab/Malbec $95 at DM's
    Chapel Hill Vicar 2008 $85

  • Thank you all for the advice and recs!!

From the looks of it, the Penfolds takes me close to my budget without going over, and is a recognizable name for me not to look like a tightass.
    Whoo!

    • +1

if the couple enjoys fine wine, then giving ta mata or wendouree could make you seem like a connoisseur who's in the know :)

      • thanks for the heads up!

  • OP, your profile suggests you are in Melbourne. If so, you might want to consider looking outside the Dan's etc box. Winehouse is based in Melbourne (has a shopfront and dedicated parking for stock pick ups), and specialises in back vintages of rare / special wines. Here is a random list of 2008 offerings: http://www.winehouse.com.au/search.asp?s=2008&x=0&y=0 Many of these wines are <$100.

Alternatively, I'd suggest Langtons Auctions. Langtons is owned by Woolworths and actually supplies a number of Dan's back vintage offerings. It offers both an online retain shop, and auctions (their main Auction closes 7 pm on a Tuesday) - even with 17% BPA, you are likely to pick up back vintage wine through Langtons cheaper than through Dan's. if you order by early next week, you should have a good chance of receiving the wine by your deadline (particularly if you ring up to hustle d theirelivery!).

If you're not keen on the above, then I'd definitely choose the Wendouree Cab Malbec - a special wine that will reward further cellering. I have a couple put away, and plan to open the first in ~ 10 years.

    • This seems pretty awesome. I might just grab a few Cab Malbecs for myself!
