  • what's it for - home theatre or presentations? should it be portable?

  • Also have a look at the lifetime of the bulb (and/or replacement costs), those can cost almost as much as the projector itself!

  • Hi inherentchoice,
its for home theatre and portable would be a good idea i guess

  • There's a cheapie XGA model on Harris Technology right now. $699 Toshiba

Excellent Contrast Ratio (2100:1) but only OK brightness 1500 Lumens, it only has a 2000 hour bulb life and it's a little noisy at 35dB..

I have an Epson EMP-X5 (XGA, 4000h bulb life, 28dB, 1760 Lumens) and it does the job pretty nicely. I think XGA is the minimum you should consider for TV/Movies/Games though.
SVGA would be OK for Presentations but you'll really start to notice the pixels for other uses.

I have mine set to throw a roughly 2x2.5m wide screen (I guess about 3m diagonal square). It's at around 3/4 zoom (ie I could make the screen size about 1.5m diagonal or 4m diagonal). That size is about the maximum comfortable from my viewing distance but individual pixels (about 5mm square) are distinguishable on a plain white screen from my seating position (also 4m). I don't find them intrusive though as you rarely ever have a plain white screen and they're very hard to distinguish on a multi-coloured screen as in a movie/game.

I feed video to it through a 15m long VGA cable bought from Selby Acoustics on ebay.
    I love it..

As for portability.. They're all pretty portable…
are you planning to ceiling/wall mount it or just run it from a bench?

  • I'm after a HD or full HD projector. First time ever looking for one so i'm a bit over my head here…

    Any suggestions anyone?

I've read a bit about the full HD offered by sony, pana and sanyo. No major dif it seems to me.

    Whats a good price atm?

    • arent those on ebay for 200 or so? whats the difference? anything decent from your shop?

  • Did you see this 1080p model on COTD for $600 today?
    http://www.catchoftheday.com.au/smallfish_info.php?products_…

It's generic but the brand name 1080p models have been $3000+

    • +2

It says 1080p input, but nowhere does it state what the output is.

    • Benq has a 1080p projector for around 1600 street price

Also Epson tw3500 is about 2500 st price. I got mine factory second from epson.com.au for 1800. With these prices for comparison, i dont see any good reasons for buying a brandless one.
