EB Game's favourite customers are unaware mothers, do you agree and ridiculous prices on new release.

Close to everytime i visit ebgames, there are mothers with there little children purchasing games and consoles for RRP, this makes me cringe, they could of saved $10 to up to $50 by purchasing it elsewhere, they also get sucked in to join EB world and unnecessary extras (eg. $2 disc cover)

They need to read either join ozbargin or compare stores.

What i have heard from employees about RRP

" We don't set the prices, the vendor does" well, how come it's $20 cheaper next door?

" Other stores are bigger, sell larger items such as TVs and stock much more items than us" ( assuming there trying to say, other stores can put out stuff cheaper because they can make it back from their other items?)

Look at your company, over 400 stores nationwide and runs a massive yearly gaming convention attended by hundreds.

    • I was this person back in 2011 (Skyrim, Uncharted 3 - couldn't help myself!).

No wonder they always ask if I want to pre-order anything nowadays. Then again, I usually preorder from Mighty Ape.

      • They always ask me if I want to pre-order too, and I never have. One time I went in on the morning of release of Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze. They said: "You really should've pre-ordered this, you weren't guarenteed a copy!". Then I looked around the barren shop, save for a tumbleweed rolling through and said "Yes, it was difficult getting past -all these people-"

Game publishers realized that retailers weren't selling out immediately anymore due to digital copies and sensible management, so they put arbitrary bonuses on some preorders. Oh man, I get a custom skin for the dog (this statement could be referring to literally anything, because every AAA has a dog now…) when I preorder, GUESS I BETTER GO PRE-ORDER, despite the fact that the game isn't actually guarenteed to be good, or the best value from this store, or even functional on release.

I thought everyone who still shops retail are just the people who haven't caught onto online shopping.

Wait, isn't EB Games main target market console gamers? The same people who chose a console and all it's limitations for the same price as a gaming PC?

Why in the world WOULDN'T you expect them to then logically exploit the same people who aren't capable of making a financially and logically reasoned choice in the first place?

… console and all it's limitations for the same price as a gaming PC
… people who aren't capable of making a financially and logically reasoned choice in the first place

Please point me to a gaming PC that is the same price as a console. Then tell me how often I'll have to upgrade the hardware and how much more electricity I'll be using so I can make a "financially and logically reasoned choice".

  • Just out of curiosity, why do you care? It's there business and if they don't want to shop around and look for discounts then they won't.

You also say they could save money, but do you know their situation, they may have income where the savings aren't really big for them, hence they just buy it regardless.

    • Didn't say i cared, it just makes me cringe because the thought of it being heaps more cheaper elsewhere. They get pressured from the kids mostly

  • Noticed this morning plenty of mothers with their children buying the newly released FIFA 16 at EB Games. Standard edition is $99 at EB whereas JB Hifi for example has it for $64.

    • You could also just get FIFA15 for $35 pre-owned from EB, for roughly an identical experience. I mean, can they really have revolutionized the "kick ball" genre in the last 12 months? As far as I know, there hasn't been big changes to "run-around-kick-ball" since 2500 BC.

I can buy bread from the convenience store for $4 a loaf or get the same thing from the supermarket for 75% less. I pay $3 extra for the convenience. EB Games is about convenience - they will never have the best prices.

The mother who takes her child to EB Games rather than a discount store or buying online is doing so for convenience and will pay a premium for it.

  • You have to also realise that EB Australia is owned by Gamestop in the US. If prices are higher here than in the US, this is something they can take advantage of. For example, selling the same game for a higher margin here and going for volume with a lower price in the US. They will keep doing this as long as it's profitable. Wouldn't be suprised if they target younger consumers somehow.

  • Just found GTA 5 PS3 cheapest @ EBgames so I'm not sure if they are most expensive

    • How much and is it new?

      • Yes brand new $35 cheapest retail

  • Get EB Games to price match Target, sometimes they will beat the price aswell.
