Best Antivirus?

I recently purchased a new laptop. My McAfee subscription has run out. Just wondering as I know there are a lot of tech people in here, what you would suggest I purchase? I'm starting to get annoying pop ups and stuff and need to do something.

I was about to purchase OneSystem Care as it looked like it was Norton, but when I googled, it, found there were a whole lot of people trying to remove it.

Cheers!

I'd recommend ESET. It's the only one I've seen so far that has successfully managed to stop Cryptolocker and its variants that come from fake Auspost/Speeding Tickets/ATO etc emails.

+1 for ESET NOD32, especially antivirus, not complex protection package.

Related to anti-virus, I just read this in the morning. AVG sell your browsing history to advertisers to support their freemium product.

    • This thread isn't about free software.
      Notice OP asks

what you would suggest I purchase?

      • to support their freemium product.

        Freemium isn't completely free.

Stay away from BitDefender. Installed it in Win8.1, was a nightmare. The auto profile rarely worked…blocked access to random files, specially when patching games. Installed it back in win 10, same problem. Now am back to Windows Defender.
    Keep Windows Defender updated.
Make sure your router has firewall active.
    Use CC Cleaner
    Malware Bytes
    and Spybot search and destroy.

Use Ghostery addon on your browser to disable trackers.
And an adblock addon to block ad popups while surfing.

    • Second this with Bitdefender ^

Scanned my DVD drive automatically and slowed it down to the point that nothing would install and made me convinced that my DVD drive and game was faulty. Automatically blocked games and software from updating even if it was disabled.

Bitdefender is your best bet, as you mentioned beware of "one system care" and Norton, there is also rouge AVG malware pretenting to be the real thing.

  • Best Antivirus?

Yourself! Just be careful what you click on and access.

    • Thanks! I already have random spin and win windows popping up. My 7 year old is now using my laptop to play Civilisation and access footy scores etc, so it's not just me.

  • I found Kaspersky one to be good for my usage. It feels lighter than it used to be (I am talking about 2007 ish era).I feel like it's because the PC I am using is a beast compared to what I had before (A core 2 duo laptop with HDD vs desktop i7 with SSD/Surface Pro 1).

  • Thanks everyone. I'll check ESET now.

    • They've got a trial period if you want to test it out and if you wanna live on the edge, they've got a beta of the new version here.

ESET provides upgrades to the latest version free of charge.

If you are using windows then i'd suggest windows defender. It is the best antivirus if you keep it updated.

  • Common sense 2015.

    Updating to 2016 soon. :)

  • I would like to recommend 360 Total Security antivirus software which is the best choice for PC security from virus. Its free version is also available. I have been using it from last 6 months and not faced any problem up till now.

  • I'd recommend Avast, as it has pretty solid all round performance and is very light on system resources. Previously had AVG, but it kept 'deactivating' itself (the free edition).

Seriously though, just get a mac. Owned Macs since the first OSX, never had a virus. My work computers are windows PC, in a sterile environment behind a firewall that blocks anything dangerous. Every 6 months I end up with some kind of virus, trojan or walware.
