ALDI Gasless 100AMP MIG Welder $199

Hi guys as per title Aldi are currently selling a Gasless 100AMP MIG Welder for $199

Specs : welding current range 65-100amp, duty cycle 25%@90 amp, takes up to 5kg wore, welding wire 0.8mm - 0.9mm, continuos wire feed and side loading

I'm attempting to restore an old Merc and need to repair some rust damage and was hoping for a bit of help from any Ozbargainers with experience in welding. I need to do bonnet, door floor wells and bull bar and was wondering if this would be suitable for the job or if it is even worth it. Haven't had any experience so any help would be highly regarded.

Thanks.

Depending on how bad the rust is you might be able to get away with using fibreglass and "bog". While many "real" welders will hate me for posting this but this one I picked up about a year ago has no missed a beat and it is cheaper than the ALDI one.

Been through about 15KG of wire so far and still going strong.

    • Yeh the rust is pretty bad definitely need to weld some new panels on. It looks better cheers. Does the mask supplied cover your whole head or do you need to hold it? And Do you use it for auto work?

      • I got one of these - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/111452576887

I used the supplied one for a bit but you do need to hold it and got annoying lol. I made up some turbo manifolds, new boot floor and exhaust front to back in my Gemini.. Paid it self off already.. love welding

        • Yeh no doubt it would have. All auto repair done yourself saves so much money if done correctly that's why it is great to do. Cheers again definitely considering that welder

I did have a little trouble with the wire feed (as you do with all migs lol) but i was using the wrong wire. feeder was set to 0.9mm but was using 0.8mm wire. something to keep in mind. supercheap and bunnings etc sell gasless wire pretty cheap as well (about $30 for 0.5kg). I normally get mine on ebay for $30 for 1kg

        • @storyteller: so much help from one person. much appreciated. with body work is 0.8mm wire what you should be using or thinner? and with your welder do you use it on the lowest setting when working on the car? im thinking if 0.8mm is fine and lower setting is needed for body work the aldi one comes with a 3 year warranty and will save me buying a new mask aswell

I don't think it matters too much which size wire you use, more so the wire speed and amps. I used about 80amps to weld 1mm sheet metal, but it really does depend on what you're welding to. I suggest spending some time on some scrap metal before going at the car, you will need an angle grinder to clean up the welds though. I taught my self while watching a lot of Youtube vids as techniques do vary.. push pull etc
