I got if after a few recommendations and… it's actually one of the worst games I've ever played. So confused reading some of these reviews, saying how deeply it affected them, how it made people feel so many emotions etc. and I got nothing… other than frustrating monotonous gameplay and lame jokes. Even GiantBomb's review said that the first half was boring and tedious but gave it a perfect score, so I persevered to the end, constantly thinking that it had to get better. I know that reviews are subjective, but I've never been so far off the mark. If you've played it, what am I missing?

I don't think you're really missing anything; if you don't like Earthbound(Mother)-like RPG games, you probably won't find it very good. It's a bit like jumping into Starcraft 2 if you're not a RTS fan. People who recommend this game willy-nilly probably don't realise this.

I found the game to be pretty fun, but I don't think it deserves the high reviews it has. Bunch of problems with pacing and writing, like you mentioned.

There was an Undertale demo released a while back, so advice is if anyone is thinking of buying this game, to play that first before you (possibly) waste $10.

    • I enjoyed playing Earthbound though… granted that was over a decade ago, as a kid. It's funny that you mention Starcraft 2, I loved it (the campaign, at least) and I normally hate RTS games! Maybe its just me.

Great soundtrack + smart writing + funny + quirky + cute dogs: what is there not to like ? I loved it :)

  • Could this be another #gamergate?

  • Personal taste? I am a fan of RPG games, that doesn't mean that I like every single "well received" RPG games that are out there.

By the way, Metacritic is deleting negative (non-hateful) user reviews of this game. Also, there are several threads on the game's Steam page shaming negative reviews and any new ones get immediately downvoted. Something is going on here…

    • Underbelly Undertale…?

  • I played it on the weekend. 5 hours on Friday evening, and 6 on Saturday morning. When I went to bed on Friday evening, all I liked was some of the jokes and the battle system was kind of cool. I had no idea, at all, how it was getting such amazing, enormous scores.

And then I got the true pacifist ending <333333333

This game is beautiful. To be entirely fair, the neutral ending leaves something to be desired, but the true ending is great. The music really drives it all home. It was so great to play a game that not only had a unique battle system, totally brand new mechanics, funny bait-and-switches. I'm a gigantic critic, I hate MGS5 for 1000 reasons and I can't recommend Undertale enough. One guy made a game more engaging than all the billion dollar AAA games combined.

I was totally dumbfounded that I didn't see any audio logs, sandbox environments, multiplayer leaderboards or regenerating health! In a game from 2015! Crazy! (This is a joke about the 2015 games industry…. Which IS a joke!) But, yeah, if you can't function outside of a sandbox, then best to stick to Watch_Dogs.

A videogame can have the length and meaningfulness of a book, the fun and action of a movie, and the beauty and grace of a song. And Undertale has all of it. Whilst the rest of the industry is trying to fold itself into being 'the multiplayer sandbox shoot experience'. You go, Toby Fox.
