Car Rental Melbourne 2 Weeks (with/out Car Seat?)

Me and missus are going to visit Melbourne in late January for 2 weeks with our 1 year old. We are going to stay at our friends's place in the western suburb, Williams Landing and hence we need to rent a car to travel around. I am thinking to rent a car right off at the airport when we landed and return it back at the airport as well when we leave for our convenience. Basically I have 2 things to consider:

  • Should I go and buy an entertainment book just to get the car rental codes in order to get the cheapest price. Is there any other cheaper option around?
  • And lastly for the car seat, would it better to drop at the nearest Kmart or BigW after we arrived and get some cheap seat and sell it off after rather than get it from the car rental. Any other suggestions?

Any comments would be much appreciated, thanks beforehand.

You should be able to take your child's car seat with you free of charge. Failing that though,

would it better to drop at the nearest Kmart or BigW after we arrived and get some cheap seat

You mean one of you wait at the airport with your child while the other drives away to buy one and come back? Seems like a bit of a hassle. How far is your friend from the airport, could they possibly buy one for you and meet you at the airport with it? There are probably organisations that hire them, but whether they could get one to the airport is another thing.

Bring your existing car seat. Most airlines (and I expect all in Australia) let you check it in for free. I'd post full details in the find me a bargain forum for the lowest car rental price, I highly doubt it will be the entertainment book discount.

I asked for info from Melbournians on a baby car seat forum.

One person recently hired a car through Apex Melbourne and say they paid $36 per day with no excess, and there was no charge for baby car seats (they had 2)

Others have suggested Hire For Baby, who will deliver the seat to the airport and fit it for you. They aparently charge $40 per week, and a $30 fitting and delivery fee.

It seems like Apex have quite a good price with free car seat. I might go with them. Thanks!

  • Rent a Bomb is cheap for a 2 week rental period but I don't think they have an airport location. I've only used them in the eastern suburbs.

    • I don't think you want to ruin your hard earned family holiday by rent a car fom Rent A Bomb, because you are getting exactly what you paid for "A Bomb", I rather pay a big more for a late, reliable car for a peace of mind :)

      • I've rented from Rent a Bomb before and the cars have been fine. Not the latest flashiest models, granted, but perfectly safe, secure and functional. For an extended period of time, they are a great bargain option. But I've only seen their branches in the city and the sth east burbs.

  • drivemycar.com.au look at this site, this won't burn your wallet a lot

  • Thanks for all the replies, I haven't checked on all of your suggestions yet. Since I posted this, I have managed to book a car from vroomvroomvroom.com.au (free cancellation) for around $45/day and the car seat will cost around $15/day. Do you think it's good enough? I will be flying from Jakarta and I think it will be a hassle to bring the car seat along with us, not mentioning the stroller, baggage, etc. Probably don't really want to go that way.
