Buying a Mobile Duty Free

I haven't travelled OS for more than a decade. So, my naïve question is whether duty free shopping is anything like what it was and does it have any advantages for buying a mobile phone, for example?

My current phone is a very successful grey LG G2 import. If wanting to upgrade, could a duty free purchase compete with all the other cut price avenues available?

Don't really know where you would find duty free phones, but the duty free shops will usually sells at RRP then minus the tax anyway. You are better off shopping around and finding the best deal greater than $300, and claiming your GST back through the TRS system, just make sure you buy from an Australian company that issues a Tax invoice.

  • Duty free shops are the most expensive shops, that's why I don't even bother looking…
Sometimes alcohol has really good prices though, definitely not electronics.

  • I have travelled a few times in the last year and have found duty free prices on mobiles not competitive.

    • Thanks for these answers, which have confirmed what I suspected.
