Help: Relocating/Moving House from Sydney to Melbourne

I have found a job in Melbourne and have to start from the first week of November 2015. I am currently renting a place in Sydney and have to move my stuff from Sydney to Melbourne, which mainly includes, a fridge, sofa/coffee table, queen size bed, washing m/c, around 15 boxes of kitchen appliances and clothes etc. I just need some help from Oz-bargainers on “How much will it cost to move the stuff using removalist” if anyone of you have some advice on this will heartily appreciate.

  • Are you asking about securing accomodation in Melbourne in advance, storage of your gear, or removalist fees/companies … or none-of-the-above?

Your post lacks a bit of detail… notably, a specific question (or two).

Congrats on the new job though! Add a bit more detail and I'm sure you'll get some good advice here.

Thanks mate, I have edited my post, hope I will get some advice.

One way you could get a better idea of what you might be up for would be to estimate how many cubic metres of stuff you need relocated. That will depend on the total volume of the '15 boxes of appliances', the QS bed, etc. But you should be able to formulate a reasonably accurate estimate, and based on that you should be able to check web-sites (or make calls) and get some pretty accurate quotes. Your stuff will be transported by truck, so the volume of it is essentially what dictates the cost of transporting it.

  • I too want to know the answer to this. My friends that have moved interstate quote anywhere between 4k to 10k depending on if you pack everything (cheaper option) or get them to pack (more expensive end).

I think if you have absolutely limited stuff, you could get some stuff chucked on the end of a truck and you could probably get it cheaper.

EDIT: This is just for moving junk from A to B, not including finding another place to rent etc.

  • It depends on how much stuff you have, cheapest could be to drive it down yourself by getting a one way trailer rental from UHAUL or something similar.

Alternatively, if you have a large amount of stuff then contact a freight forwarder that has a warehouse in both Melbourne and Sydney and get them to quote you an all in seafreight quote (40ft will fit your car in it also if you were wanting to do that, otherwise a 20ft container will do the job). You cant get a container dropped off at a residential property without a permit so you will most likely have to pack it at a warehouse then unpack it at a warehouse in Melbourne.
This will be the cheapest option if you were able to pick up and drop off the goods at the local warehouse.

If not then it is likely that trucking it could be cheapest (like a gumtree removalist company or something..)

The issue with moving personal effects is that companies know that you will move it no matter what and will charge an arm and a leg for it (so always ask for a cheaper rate).
Another reason why it will cost so much is because you aren't familiar with the process, meaning that they have to baby you through the process and it can be extremely painful for them.

  • I used Santa Fe Wridgways when I moved from Melbourne to Perth 12 months ago. I had a fridge, TV and heaps of boxes full of appliances, clothes etc and it cost me $900. They packed the fridge and TV for me. If you don't need it urgently ask them to backload it to save costs. They basically wait until they can fill a truck full of your items and other peoples before taking the drive down.

    • Thanks mate, I will definitely call " Santa Fe Wridgways " and see what they have on offer.
