MAPS.ME Android / iOS off-Line Map + Navigation - Gone Open Source

Via Hacker News. MAPS.ME has gone open source. It used to be a "bargain" when the app was temporarily free occasionally. Then it became permanently free. Now the developer has released its source code under Apache Public License 2, and hosted it on GitHub.

Definitely one of better off-line maps out there. Helped me heaps when I drive through Tasmania earlier this year where you can hardly get any Optus signal.

How does it compare to HERE? In terms of:

    • Map accuracy
    • Navigation accuracy
    • Navigation interface (lane guidance? etc.)
    • Stability
    • Responsiveness (lag?)
    • POI database

I mean, it's great that it's open-source. But it'd also be nice to know how it compares to other big free offline map/navigation apps.

    • MAPS.ME is pretty much a front end for Open Street Map so the map would be accurate as the community makes it be. I actually haven't used HERE but from experience Nokia's mapping is also top notch. However there's still a difference between "open sourced" & "free".
