Best Value Telstra Prepaid Data option?

I'm currently on the new Telstra Freedom Plus with my phone which gives 1.3gb. Plus, according to the Telstra website I can use the $30 credit for 3 new data topups @ $10/ 1gb (not the old plus packs). Meaning 1.3gb+3*1gb topups = 4gb (possibly as i cant work out how to get the topups). Most likely misleading & topups will need to be paid for, but will give it a red hot crack.

Now, ive got another sim I want to get the most value out of, max data value prefered.

Option 1. Activate as mobile broadband, get 3gb & transfer the $30 credit me2u (with a phone) back to my Freedom plus. Not sure if there is any data top up/ plus pack option here?

Option 2. Activate as a tablet sim. Get 3gb, but can't transfer the $30 via creditMe2u..but it was suggested I can use creditme2u from my phone to transfer credit on to the tablet sim & I'll get more data?? No interest in buying apps, so the $30 will be wasted (unless I call Telstra & ask them to put it on my phone?)

I rang Telstra & they had no clue, telling me you can't use creditme2u with a mobile broadband sim…parents been doing this for years!

So Ozbargain geniuses, which option gives the best data from purely the $30 starter pack credit?

Cheers all

  • you need to use real money to buy data top up, not from the credit.

  • When I went in to a Telstra store I was told you cannot use a mobile broadband Sim in a phone as Telstra can detect it and cancel your sim or something. This didn't sound right to me but its something to think about.

    • Interesting, my parents have been using theirs as a Voip/Viber phone for years, plus you can call them normally as the number is active. The creditme2u feature also handy.

  • freedom plus highest ROI; experiment & find out.

lol Ringing them is like asking a dog for the time. Sometimes a dog might bark twice randomly at 2 o'clock and give you the right answer. This is what Telstra is doing.

  • On the old grandfathered mobile broadband offers activated prior to 1 July 2014 it is much easier to use the CreditMe2U facility. It can still be done on the new Data Pass offer but requires sending an SMS with Transfer to 1258888.

It is much easier to CreditMe2U to and from a phone offer like Freedom Plus. Just send $10 from your starter kit back to your SIM on Freedom Plus and see what happens… You'll find that only SIMs on Freedom Plus or Data Pass will end up with a little bonus from your experiment.

  • Cheers, I worked out the Credit Me2u via SMS. I didn't notice any "bonuses", except maybe the credit expiry date?

    • +1

Sometimes it doesn't show up immediately, just refresh and you should see it show up.
