Best Modems for NBN?

Just after some advice on modems.

We got the NBN about 3 months ago and to start with it was fantastic.
One child flat out gaming, the other on Netflix and me pulling down 2 large files.
CNET speed test came up 89mbps, speed to burn!

Anyway decided to hook a NAS box up to network and that's when the problems started.

I had been using a Netgear N600 modem and had never had an issue with it, but decided to update it and got a Netgear Nighthawk X6.
I bought as a stand-alone modem, but is just a router now.

I have 2 networks which just about drove me mad with my devices disconnecting and reconnecting.
So try to hook my Dell Alienware M18x laptop up to the X6 which connects to it but can't get on the internet.

So speak to Netgear and they just duck shove me around different techs for about 3 days.
So now just want to sell both modems and get one that I can use with good range and speed.

Any ideas?

  • Cant recommend a modem but something I saw recently… make sure the lan cables you are using are cat5e or better.
    Check all the cables…

  • I'm using an ASUS RT-AC68U for my NBN connection.

Works great, but don't really have anything to compare it to. I based my decision on online reviews when deciding on an NBN router.

  • Thanks, have been been reading tech maps for ever and the cables are definitely a worry but not sure how I check them and the Asus jobby is definitely on my list.
The netgear N600 has been a great modem, I bought the first one for the house I was in whilst working away which worked so well that I purchased a second one for my home but feel they are a bit old now. Had the first one working very well with updated firmware which died in a storm then plugged the second one in and can't update the firmware and the signal won't reach my garage, through two brick walls but only about 30 feet and is very intermittent, technology is wonderful when it works.
