Wedding Suit - Melbourne Recommendations

Hello,

I'm in the market for a wedding suit, and visited Myer/DJ to see their range.

It was quite limited, and too pricey.

What recommendations can you make for a suit for next year. I believe a wool suit will be better quality.

Budget is around $500 - $700.

If the suggestion is a tailor in Melbourne, please recommend their store.

Just wear the one you wore to your parole hearing.

    • Is there a backstory to this comment?

    • N/A.

      Thanks though

  • What type of suit are you lookign for? Tuxedo?
I would suggest Hallenstein. Well fitted suits. Easy returns if needed (You send to an Australian address)

    • Looking for a classic suit - casual wedding suit.

I looked at their website, but limited range in wool.

I went looking in all the Majors plus Peter Jackson etc etc

Found one in DJ's I really liked and nearly dropped $1000 plus tailoring.

Did a quick google an found the wholesaler has a small open to public shop in Sunshine and managed to get the exact same suit including tailoring for $400. Brand was Studio Italia.

The shop was Berkely Apparel 503 Ballarat Rd, Sunshine VIC 3020 (03) 9300 9888. http://www.berkeleyapparel.com.au/

No affiliation, just a happy customer.

    • Thanks, will check them out…

Was this also for a wedding?

Yep, it was for my wedding.

  • Not even kidding but I bet you could get something you want down to every detail for a cheaper price than buying domestically if you go to a South East Asian country like China or Vietnam (including your plane ticket).

I buy all of my off the rack suits here. Priced right in your budget and a very decent range of fabrics. They also don't have too much of an issue mixing and matching suit and pant sizes to get a good starting point for the alterations. They make the "Made in Australia" suits for a number of local brands and (I think) the dress uniforms for some of the emergency services.

The biggest winner is they include a fitting and the alterations in the cost of the suit. At your shopping centre suit retailer, you MIGHT get the pant hemmed and maybe the waist adjusted as part of the cost. Over the years and for various suits, they've done all sorts of things as part of the fitting for me. Just make sure you tell them about any parts of the fit that don't feel right (eg seat of the pants too tight), as well as any little adjustments you might want as part of the fitting process (eg adjust your left shirt sleeve to show off your over sized Panerai or IWC…. or maybe if you want the hipster-lots-of-socks look).

Factor in two return trips there if you're picky about getting the fit just right.

Old school warehouse setup. Can get super busy on a Saturday morning, so go during the week or first thing on Saturday. They might also make a heart starting Greek coffee for you if you time your arrival just right.

  • Trackies and a flanno over a wifebeater. People still wear suits? Got a top hat and tails with a gold watch attached to your waistcoat too?

    • I'm sorry that you had to wear formal attire to celebrate your friend's wedding. You must have had a horrible time.

A bit over your budget, but check out http://www.suitshop.com.au/ for a made to measure suit. Highly recommended. I got one made last year in Sydney. They have a Melbourne location too.

  • I bought my suit online from JCrew after seeing the suit I wanted in a magazine. One of their wedding stylists (Tammy) was amazing and after sending her all my measurements she helped me pick the right suit and styled it with all the right accessories. She also styled my best man. I would really recommend them, they quite often have sales or send you vouchers which bring the price right down.

    Thanks guys,

After reading other reviews, I visited Designer Suits.
    241 Sydney Road, Coburg.

He can tailor what I need, for $500, plus a vest for $125. Seems legit.

    • cheaper than the last tailor i visited in Bangkok.
I'll have to visit sometime and compare quality.

We made our suits and wedding dress in VN. My wedding dress retailed for $5K but bought it for $300.I made a few adjustments to the design but it was a fast turnaround, you can save if your future wife wants to do this and you can get all the bridesmaid dresses done too. If this is not feasible. You can hire clothes as well. My husband rarely uses his wedding suit, we have for other people's weddings and a formal occasion.

  • On a side note I saw lots of invites for weddings in VN too, all hand made. About $1-2 each and they sell the same type of thing in Oz, maybe even less intricate for about $14 each. You can even have rose scented paper.
