Optus Cable to Launch AC Router in early Nov.. will you upgrade?

So i was in Optus yesterday and the guy told me that in early NOV optus cable will be launching a AC router (similar to the telstra t-max)

he said they already have pricing and that existing customers will have to pay a $199 upgrade fee for the new modem

Description of AC router i found (that telstra use)

Inside this router is dual-band networking technology capable of transmitting across both 600 and 1300Mbps simultaneously, allowing customers to separate their network in two, and providing a fast and faster set of networks for the home. Devices that need the basics can jump onto the 600Mbps network, while home entertainment and download intensive gadgets can take the 1300Mbps one, splitting the bandwidth for devices that need it.

Also included is a 4 port Gigabit Ethernet section, making it possible to plug in for faster speeds when wires are involved.

From what the guy at optus told me, the optus model will be the newly released Netgear AC2000 modem/router

My friend has the telstra one and loves it, but i am interested to hear from others if they think its worth the upgrade cost.
We run a lot of wireless devices in our house and a few net based streaming services at once at times.

Cheers

Not sure about "NetGear AC2000" modem/router, but I thought it would be more prudent to get a separate wireless router bridged to your existing cable modem. I use NetGear R7000 which is AC1900, bought for less than $160 off eBay a while ago to bridge to my Telstra cable modem. These days you can get more even faster models, and you can choose whatever brand instead of using whatever handed to you from Optus.

Just buy an AC router now if you want it, http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=20… Other stores have them cheaper.

If you have money to spend, get this http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&c…

for cable users, might be interested in the chart of routers listed by order of WAN to LAN performance.

As you can see the NetGear R7000 is at the very top of the list, eclipsing the TP-Link Archer C7.

      R8000 for me.

  • Hey Scotty, ozhunter, scrimshaw and nocure, I'm in a similar situation - the ISP given router honestly sucks. I tried an airport extreme borrowed from a friend for 2 weeks and love how stable it is. A new one is rather expensive at 300 bucks, but I found refurbs for 210. I like its coverage, it also has a usb port that can be used for shares. Wifi has been stable and smooth too. Airplay is fabulous, no choppy video.

Is this a good option? What is your opinion?
