Melbourne Cup - Work Event (Compulsory and Have To Pay To Attend)

Hi all!

The Melbourne Cup is on its way and it's pretty much an event all throughout Australia. I work in a sales environment and my company has booked to celebrate Melbourne Cup at at a nice fancy restaurant. We get our meals paid for if we meet target (which is highly unlikely and that means everyone). Not meeting target means $100 per person and it's compulsory to go.

Is it the company that should pay or the employee?

Also what is your company doing for Melbourne cup?

Poll question: have you ever had to pay to go to your company's event for Melbourne Cup?

$100 per person and it's compulsory to go.

That's so wrong. Probably illegal too. Just don't go and don't pay, they can't make you. If they penalise you for that, you could probably sue them.

    • Agreed! Screw that for a joke!

go, don't pay, walk through the door. take out "ringing" phone from jacket pocket listen to it for 3 seconds and scream "OMG, I'll be right there" and run out.

  • Looking forward to seeing how this thread develops. I bet this is illegal. Immoral definitely.

Sales is always a law unto itself. As one of my colleagues so eloquently put it. "These are the real sales guys; the ones where you count your fingers after you shake hands with them".
