Your Opinion - Losing out on Conversion Fee Because Seller Refused to Send Items and Refunded after 6 Weeks

Hi guys,

Wondering what your opinion on this matter is.

You buy an item in US dollars say $100US ($140 AUD) from a China seller, wait for the item but it never comes, after months of disputes you finally get a refund for $100 US dollars but by then the AUD climbed up and so your $100 USD that you paid now converts to $130 AUD.

I know it is a risk with foreign exchange and there is chance that the $100 USD could of been worth $150 AUD but should there be buyer protection to get back exactly what they paid for?

Ebay and paypal will ignore your pleads and disputes, especially if you paid for their conversion fees.

That's the risk you take when buy/sell online overseas.

  • I don't quite understand OP. You said you know there is a risk and yet asking if there should be protection? So which part of the risk do you understand then? Trading (buy/sell) in foreign currency is always subject to change.

  • Frankly i agree with ozyboy, but i just wanted to know opinions and open a discussion, i know somebody that lost out over $100 due to this issue, if you lose out then i can see how frustrating it can be for the buyer. I guess people wouldn't complain if they did make a bit extra cash due to waiting longer.

    • same goes for seller who has to refund but due to fluctuation in foreign currency, it could be frustrating for him too if AUD goes down ?

  • Well…as first poster said that's the risk you took. Also no one said you have to convert US->AUD right now?

Your $100USD is still worth $100USD, go find another seller who accepts USD and buy from them.

Or alternatively, wait another 6 months and your $100 USD will likely be worth $150 AUD

  • If you purchase it in US currency then you're refunded in US currency. If you want to be refunded back the same amount in AU currency then elect to be charged by Paypal in AU currency.

I booked tickets overseas 6 months in advance when the AU's dollar was awesome - paid in US$. A week before departure an emergency occurred and my family and I couldn't travel and the airline cancelled the tickets at my request. The AU's dollar had dropped and I made AU$166 profit with the refund.

    • Should've booked out the plane ;)
