Pre Employment Medicals

Can someone advise please on this situation? Had an initial interview and then a second interview and offered the job BUT have to pay for own pre employment medical. I personally have never been asked to pay for my own medical but this person is currently unemployed so really needs/wants the job.

Certainly sounds weird. But if the job pays ok money then you might want to pay for the check up just to get the job.

Consider it investing $200 and get a job that pay even just as low as 45k is a good investment :P

  • What's the job? Most GPs will do this, it will cost you between $70-$100 usually sometimes more if its a more detailed medical (pilot etc).
If you want the job and you've been offered it - I'd go ahead and get the medical done and go for it.
Call up you're GP clinic make an appointment for a medical for work. Check with the employer if they have any specific requirements or forms that need to be done for the medical.

Good luck on your new job.

  • Seems to be pretty standard for a lot of employers requesting a medical check. I had to get one for my job to ensure I was able to lift heavy items etc. and obviously no existing conditions that would put me out of work within a short time frame after employment.

  • Work related expense -tax deductible?

Expenses incurred in getting a job are not deductible. It is only once you are employed that you can make deductions. If the medical check was (as you say) a pre-employment condition then you can't claim it.

I had to do one many years ago when I was young.

The GP looked at me funny like WTF?

It's a really odd thing to ask for really, are they an American company because that's common there.

  • This isn't for me, its for a friend of mine who commented that they had to pay for the medical (and its a desk job not anything physical). I've had to take a pre employment medical for every job I've had (desk job, no heavy lifting etc) but I have never been asked to pay for it; the employer has always paid and I have gone to their clinic etc. My friend really has no option but to pay for it but I find it very unusual and to be honest, poor form, asking someone unemployed to fork out $200 for a medical before they'll give you a job. And my friend is expected to go to the clinic the future employer choses. That's why I thought I'd ask for others experiences/opinions.

    • Something dodgy if they make you go to a particular clinic for it.

  • Tell them to shove it. And medical really? Proving what? Bend over and cough?

  • Yep…that was done at his last pre employment medical. But he didn't need to pay for it. (By the way, there are no medical issues at all)

  • Just in case its useful for anyone else in this situation - my friend told the Job Network people (I'm not sure exactly what they are called) and they said they would look into paying this for him. The company are not at all dodgy, just really tight when it comes to costs eg buy your own uniform type stuff
