Mobile Phone/SIM Card Options in Japan

Hello,

Some family members are travelling overseas to Japan soon, and want to take their mobile phones. Primarily, they expect to communicate with each other (within Japan). Does anyone know what the most cost effective options are?

I just got back from Japan and utilised the services of eConnect Japan. I paid 4,590 Japanese Yen (~$53) for a SIM card that granted me 100MB data per day for one month. Stayed for 3 weeks, coverage was good, able to keep in touch with people around Japan using Line, Messenger, Hangouts and WhatsApp.

Unfortunately Travel Sims Direct were all sold out of their 7 and 14 day options prior to me leaving — but they seem to be back in stock. TSD seem to have the better deal, but I can vouch for the reliability of the eConnect Japan service.

    • The eConnect plan you went with didn't include voice calls though, is that right?

      • Correct, those are only good for voice calling over internet connection as they are data only sims and can be thrown away after use. Unless you're roaming on your Australian sim, you need to rent a sim with a Japanese number to make phone calls, which usually will be delivered to your hotel and will come with a return envelope for you to post back at the end of your holiday.

As for the cheapest I don't know, I used eConnect as I was there on my own so just used viber to talk back home. So if you family just want to use viber/skype etc to communicate within Japan then econnect will be ok.

        • Yeah, sounds good. I can give them Skype minutes as well, which I guess would let them call landlines if needed.

    • great advise QW3RTY!

  • I used http://japan-wireless.com/products.html and got a 4g wireless egg delivered to the hotel . I had 10 gigs of data a day and was perfect to use while driving around for google maps. We contacted everyone via Viber / whatsapp. I was getting about 60mbps download. You drop it off at a post office before leaving and very reliable.
