Best dual sim mobile phones

Hi All, have had two numbers for a long time and decided that I am finally in the market for a good dual sim mobile. There are obviously slews of them from Chinese brands, however it's still not the norm from a mainstream brand and I am wanting to preferably buy something with and Australian warranty.

So far the front runner is the Huawei P8, and I'd have already bought it but I read there are issues with android wear notifications at launch and I haven't been able to confirm if they are resolved. I am pretty brand agnostic but I would prefer an Android with a small size (prefer 5.0 inch max) but it's been increasingly difficult to find a phone in this range. As such I thought I would turn over to the community. Also Optus networks are required. Another option is the 1+, but again not Australian Warranty and bigger than I would like also

Thanks in advance

  • Any price limitations? I heard the moto x play will have a dual sim model released. Not sure when but it would be available outright through Voda for around $569 mark.

alternatively… just tweak the settings to find some you like.

I know the Zenfone 2 seems quite popular.

    • No price limitation realistically, once you are approved for an iPhone you can get pretty much anything :-P

  • +1

ZTE Blade S6 is $300ish from JB or Officeworks (pretty sure it supports 3G 900MHz too - despite JB not listing it)

Not too much else in Australian stock,
but some great options from the top tier Chinese Brands
    MEIZU M2 mini
    Xiaomi Mi4c
    for example.
The reduced price you pay is essentially the Warranty value anyway.

    • Thanks for that, agree if it's your personal phone but I don't think work would see it that way

  • You can get a Dual Sim version of the LG G4 on import.

However, with any dual sim phone, be careful of the bands included - most of them are focused on the asian market and therefore might not include the bands you want.

    • That's good to know, will have a look. I was considering the g4 until I saw it in the shop, even with that screen to phone ration it's just too big to fit in a jeans pocket. Coming from an one m7 I thought that was as big as I could go. If dual sim want an issue I'd probably get a z5 compact

      • +1

Jeans pocket was my determinate too, which means 5 inches.

However you can't really get anything decent on the price/performance equation at that level, and thus you end up with the 5.5-5.8 region by default.

        • Except the z5 compact

        • @Jackson:

          "4.6 inch 720p display", "2GB" - $849

To my mind something that is sub-Nexus 5, closer to Nexus 4, but costs near twice as much fails in the price/performance stakes.

It's a pity, but Sony do have a habit of screwing up their positioning.

        • @sane: It's pretty hard to tell the difference between 720 and 1080 on that size screen so I don't think that matters much, it would have been good to have an extra gig but with the 720 this phone still has great performance in most area, and the price is obviously high but it's still a lot lower than a iPhone so I'm still saving people money. It's a shame there isn't much else in that size though.

  • Also important to note, 2G networks will stop operating, at least for Telstra, by the end of 2016.

You will need to check whether the second sim slot supports anything other than 2G else the phone will be as good as a single sim phone when 2G networks are all shut off.

  • I've never had a dual sim phone that worked properly. May as well get 2 cheap 3G candybar phones for cheap instead with different ringtones instead.

  • The LG G4 has a dual sim version if you look around - https://yatango.com.au/shopping/lg-g4-32gb-4g-lte-dual-sim.h…
Moto G is another cheaper option

  • If you want one for Telstra with B28/700mhz, then LG G4 (H818P version) or Zenfone2 (TW Version) are both good.
I wanted the G4 but it was $800 for the H818P version when I was buying so I got a Zenfone2 TW instead.
Pretty happy with it but I will be getting a 950XL dual sim upon release.

  • The Sony M4 Aqua supports the australian bands and is dual sim, you can get AU stock from JB and Optus for around $330-$350 but it is only 8gb internal memory, the grey import one from places like qd_au is around $330 and is 16gb internal memory

  • The P8 notification issue (android wear and some apps) has been addressed and an update is expected in the next week or so.
Workaround is to change the default lock screen (add a picture or something), as in do not use stock ones as it appears this is causing the issues.

I had a P8 until recently (just got the nexus 6P) and i had no issues doing above in line with my Huawei Watch

Also remember the P8 has a screen promise.. but it before dec 31 (in aus) and if you smash the screen u can go to on of their kiosks (10 in oz) and get the unit swapped (1 time only)

They also have a G8 coming out soon.. which also has SP i believe

    • How do you find the 6p compared to the p8? Understand that it's bigger, higher resolution, vanilla android, but I am more interested in a smaller phone. Was the Huawei launcher annoying or did you find anything else that bothered you about one but not the other?
