Web Hosting and Domain Name

Hi all

I'm looking to set up a website, just to showcase my portfolio for prospective employers. Not expecting it to have many visits, so I'm wanting to get a bit of cheap webspace. Anything above 500mb is probably already pretty overkill for my needs. Any suggestions on a host? I would like a domain name too. I don't know if these things are cheaper if bought together… so looking for some advice.

Thanks all.

I would probably just go with ventra ip for the domain. Hosting depends really, it's pretty hard to go past hostgator if you have a 75off voucher. a service similar to shopify but just for websites, might also be worth a look at, I'm sure something exists. ah wix, don't go with wix.

ventraip for Australia and mddhosting for US

  • Thanks guys. is netvirtue any good? Their Saver+ is only $1.95 a month. I'm not technical in this area, could someone take a look at it and help me break it down as to whether it is suitable for my needs? https://www.netvirtue.com.au/economy-hosting

    Cheers.

Yes, NetVirtue or Zuver would be my recommendations. More than enough for a basic site.

$25 ish a year for hosting, $10-15 for a domain (depending on what you pick).

Another upvote for Netvirtue. I use the same $1.95 for my personal website and their more expensive plans for a few other companies websites I set up. The $1.95 one is a bit slow, the more expensive plans are a lot faster, but they're reliable nonetheless.

With domain name, I went with GoDaddy for $0.99 with coupon code (not sure if they're still available), then after one year switched to 1&1 (like $0.20 for one year if you transfer in from another domain). The transfer was pretty painless. At the end of this year I'll see if I can pay $0.99 to transfer back to GoDaddy.

EDIT: google "GoDaddy $0.99" to get the link for the promo. DON'T FORGET to disable the auto-renew right after you buy it :)

Netorigin is good and they give you 60% off i think, however im with i-hostyou or something and you can use 1FREE for coupon and its like $1/pm.

  • Thanks guys, loads of great help there.

I think I'll go with NetVirtue Zuver's $2 a month and use the 99cent domain from godaddy, as suggested by rochow and paperkut. But really, thanks all, for everything.

Quick question with domain names. How do emails work? Do I automatically get [email protected], or do I need to buy an email address? Also would I be able to redirect mail to [email protected] to my gmail account?

    Thanks.

Once you change the NS for your domain to NetVirtue, you'll get <everything>@mydomainname.com you just need to decide whether a specific email address exists, whether it gets delivered to an inbox or forwarded to somewhere else.

If you are forwarding to your gmail address, you can set it up with NetVirtue your hosting provider, directly from the control panel.

      • Thanks Scotty,
        So the steps are:

        1. get hosting with NetVirtue
        2. get a domain with godaddy
        3. transfer the domain to NetVirtue… is that right?

The email is not a big deal really, but would be fun to have.

You don't need to transfer the domain to NetVirtue. GoDaddy would let you change the name server for your domain — just change them to the ones provided by NetVirtue. So from this point forward GoDaddy would be the domain's registrar, but NetVirtue would (1) host the DNS for your domain (2) host your website (3) host your emails.

        • sounds simple enough. Thanks!

  • Hi,

I am planning to setup a coupon website along with Apps something similar to our Groupons & Scoopons.
I will be creating the website on wordpress.

To start with it can you please recommend me good and value for money web hosting and domain name registration sites.
Going through I found there are these web hosting sites which provide free domain name for a year.
So any recommendations here for a good value for money websites.Would the above recommendation be good for it.

It would be a high traffic site eventually.

    Thanks,
    Vaibhav

  • I use ventra for my domain, and I'm using the free tier Google cloud platform server running WordPress for my site (plenty of options as to what you set up).
