US or AU PSN - which one should I go?

Hi just got a PS4 should I go with the US or Australian Playstation Network?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • I'd probably go US because the prices are slightly lower (even with the tanking exchange rate). I think to purchase things you need to buy USD PSN prepaid cards, which is a bit of a pain, although there are a lot of websites which sell them. I think I read somewhere that you could link up your paypal to think it was coming from a US bank account, but I could never figure out how it worked. Games etc should be available on your console regardless.

I only have a PS3 though, not sure if it has changed on PS4.

I was able to make this work by:
      - Setting up a US paypal account by using a fake address (i used some casino)
      - US paypal lets you use an AU debit/credit card to draw funds from.
      - Logging into your US PSN from your web browser, where there is an option to add wallet funds from paypal, which you can then spend on the store.

US PSN does work out to be considerable cheaper, plus it seems there are a lot more deals and sales. As someone has noted though, you can only use US DLC on games you've purchased on the US store, not AU ones, so be careful in that regard.

      • Can you use the US paypal to draw USD from 28 degrees? (to get good exchange rate and no conversion fee)

        • to answer my question, yes you can

  • As someone who has had to have 3 regional PSN accounts due to moving abroad a few times to various countries, and in every region feeling annoyed that a) Sony doesn't allow switching regions on accounts, and b) US content was always vastly superior in terms of range and price…

US PSN x 1000. I envy the fact that you are starting out so to speak and can make a clean decision where to start.

Only possible downside is that you are exposed to the AUD tanking further, so that could negate some of the price differential. In practice, it shouldn't matter as US prices are sooo much better to begin with.

In practice, the PS3 & 4 allowing multi accounts makes the decision semi irrelevant. However, if you ever ventured into the ecosystem enough to buy a Vita, well those allow ONE account at a time and is a major pain to switch accounts, involving restoring the device to default, switching cards, yada yada.

You can actually go with both! I'd advise using AU as your primary, then you can also open a US account (see various online guides), add it to the same PS4, and if you enable the "Make primary ps4" option, you can play the US bought games from your AU account.

Wouldn't you have issue with DLC if you buy a physical copy of an AU game and have US PSN?

    Check out this website

    https://psprices.com/region-us/index

You can select region and it will give you a good idea on price difference.

Check the pricing on a few of the games you would like to purchase and see where you stand.

Altho as mentioned earlier as the PS4 is dual account you can have your cake and eat it too :-)

    • Mmmmm cake

  • Us psn even with the $ the way it is the deals they put out are crazy

  • I think that a Canadian account works out cheaper for all the Vita stuff I've looked at, I want to change my vita from US to Canada but too much hassle :( So might be worth checking that too

  • Thanks for all the tips.
Does it make any difference for playstation plus?

    • I dont beleive so. If you go for US PS+ you will need to be logged into your US PSN account to play online.

PS+ monthly games seems to be the same world wide (generally) so maybe go AU PS+ and have a 2nd US account for buying cheap games.

Only thing you will miss will be the PS+ special discounts from the region you dont choose.

      • You dont need 2 be logged in just make that account primary and your good

        • Cool. Didnt know that

  • Only problem with using a US account as your main account is if you buy most games locally, DLC and bonus content won't be compatible with the US account.. Most DLC can be redeemed or bought on an AUS account and will then work on the US account, but stuff like in game currency (such as the bonus money that came with GTA V) is tied to the account its redeemed on. So if the game has account specific DLC or micro-transactions then you won't be able to purchase/use that content unless you buy the US version of the game.

For this reason, I'd recommend using an AUS account as primary and use a secondary US account to buy cheap games on sale.

  • is anyone here still looking for a PS+?
