What do I do with 400,000 Qantas points?

What's a good use for them? Wife and I travel once a year, but we have no need to upgrade to business class or whatever.

Anyone wanna buy these points? What's the going rate these days?

    • quick! someone post this guy's offer on frontpage, wat a deal!

  • +2

Look at previous sales in the classifieds section, rate is roughly 1-1.2 cents per point. So your looking for at least $4000

  • +2

Do the best thing, book a one world round the world trip, absolute best value for your points.

  • If you don't know what to do with It,give it to me then :)

This is a bit awkward if he's actually sold them to Jeracoo3 for $1000

    • He won't be able to transfer 400K points in one transaction, I think it's only 100K. So, someone was lying.

  • no need for business class

you know they have lay flat beds, right?

    • +1

once I was on an economy flight and I laid on the three middle seats overnight

      ozb deal of the century

      • not if someone was caining farts into the seat prior to your head going there

  • Use them for business class.

    You get lounge access

    Flat beds

    Free PJs on some airlines

    Champagne once you board

    Fast track for customs

Why wouldn't you upgrade to business class??

Cause he could sell them for $4000?

Lets imagine two mates, both with 400,000 Qantas points and wanting to go to London without spending any money.

      First mate does the following:

      1. Sell the points for $4k.
      2. Buy a economy ticket for $2k (worst case) with Qantas.
      3. Spend $300 AUD on a deluxe hotel & massage at your destination to rejuvenate yourself to feel as good as if you had taken a business class flight.
      4. Have $1700 AUD spending money and have a ripper holiday courtesy of some thrifty point accumulation.

Money out of pocket = $0.

      Second mate does the following:

      1. Sells 208,000 points for $2,080 (You'll need 192,000 points to upgrade to business Melb-London with Qantas from what I can determine)
      2. Buy a $2k up-gradable economy ticket
      3. Use points to upgrade to a business class seat
      4. Brag to your economy mate about how good business class was how you got incredible 3cents of value per point by upgrading to business class and how he was an idiot for selling them for 1cent each
      5. Have $80 AUD spending money for the trip, which means he spends his days loafing about in his business class pyjamas around a hostel not fit for a sewer rat.

Money out of pocket = $0.

Who's having a better time for the same number of points?

      • i LOVE this analysis!
yeh nah first guy's got a better life overall

      • shiet so with my 400k baller balance I can only upgrade twice (that's one trip for a couple)?

        Will sell.

      • +1

the way you've explained it, person 1 got the better deal.
Also, if person 2 bought a fully flexible fare (upgradable) for 2k, then it's very unlikely that person 1 paid 2k for his fare non flex fare, rather he'd have gotten it for closer to 1500.

ALso, if person 2 has no status, then good luck securing the upgrade. It's far more likely that they'll end up in Y, as their upgrade gets knocked back and be worse off than person 1 who paid ~$500 less to sit in the same plane.

  • There have been a few discussions on this in the past. I think you're right to sell them if you can't find a use for them. Business class upgrades are worth several times anything else, but if that doesn't appeal to you then I think selling them is the next best bet, followed by ~$2500 in gift cards.

  • You can only upgrade with points if you booked a certain fare class. Eg, the cheapest fares are often classified as not being able to be upgraded. It's a good idea to do the home work before getting in too deep with ff points as it's not as good as it looks sometimes.

If you just want cash, buy a series of gift cards with the points and then save the money you would otherwise have spent.

However if you are prepared to save a few more points this is what I would do.

    Starting balance 400,000 points

    • 2RTW tickets -280,000

    Leaves 120,000 points

Now at this point we are aiming to get the equivalent of $1,000 in Caltex/Woolworths gift cards. So we need 10 * 16920 = 169200 points

169200 - 120,000 = 49,200 points to accrue which I suspect you will accrue fairly easily.

So now use the gift cards for shopping and save the $1,000 you would otherwise have spent.

Next, sign up for IHG rewards http://www.ihg.com/hotels/us/en/rewardsclub/home (its free to join)

Follow the IHG thread at www.flyertalk.com until IHG run one of their regular 100% bonus points sales. At the last one in June you could effectively buy 120,000 IHG points for $US690 which is about $A1,000.

    http://www.headforpoints.com/2015/06/30/ihg-rewards-club-buy…

At this point you now have 120,000 IHG points. Follow IHG's website closely and wait to see their regular bulletin's about their points breaks promotions which is a list of hotels you can redeem 5000 IHG points points for a night's stay (for the next couple of coming months). 120,000 points = 24 nights.

Plan a trip around the world at places you can take advantage of the point breaks' promotion.

And there it is - 449,200 points gives you a 24 day round the world trip for 2 including accommodation.

Alternatively if you are really stumped with what to do with the points donate them here and save several people's eyesight.

    • wow excellent analysis! thank you

how exactly do RTW tickets work?

more efficiently i could sell 100,000 points for $1000 aud to use to buy those IHG points you mentioned

    • don't you also have to pay the taxes on the flights as well?

      • Yes, all the taxes and fuel, fines need to paid - and the cc fee.

        • This is true. My round the world trip last year cost me about $800 in taxes all up. One secret to getting the taxes down is to fly out of Amsterdam Airport. I think if you go via Hong Kong you may also save a bit on taxes but I can't confirm this. Whatever you do, don;t fly out of Heathrow as the British tax departures quite heavily.

  • if u are still selling, please reply with contact details, as im after points and am happy to negotiate good price :) Thanks!

    • I have 200,000+ I am looking to sell if you are still interested?

      • I am interested if you haven't sold them yet.

        • Sure, send me a private message :)

  • 1 RTW ticket on one world carriers (QF, AA, BA, Qatar, Iberia, Cathay) in business class is 240K points + taxes which will vary depending on where you want to go. You can have up to 5 stopovers and total mileage cannot exceed 35,000 miles. You can quite easily do AUS>ASIA>EUROPE>USA>ASIA>AUS on one of these fares. Finding award ticket availability is the next main hurdle as some routes are more popular than others and need to be booked upto 350 days in advance. This is one of those once in a lifetime trips for some people…

You could sign up to the current CC deal with 80K bonus points, to get you upto 480K which is enough to get you going.

Otherwise you can fly one way from MEL>DUBAI with Emirates in business for 96K points each or 144K points each + ~$400 taxes each….

There are so many opportunities if you want to use the points for travel, but again it really depends on what you want to use them for.

Just be careful selling them. It's OK, unless the person you sell them to (and yourself) have done too many 'family transfers' recently.

Both your accounts will be frozen and maybe cancelled and forfeited too.
