Need to Transfer to ACT P-Plate Licence

Hi, I am a P-plater in Sydney.

You may already be aware of the P-plate restrictions that apply to a NSW p-licence as opposed to the ACT counterpart. I recently bought a car which falls under these restrictions, which was largely my mistake without checking. So I thought I might try transfer my licence before I ultimately re-sell the car and make a large loss.

If I were to follow the proper procedures, I would need to rent a place in ACT/Canberra, and get the proper proof of residency (e.g. show a letter with my new address), and take the documents to your "RTA" equivalent to get my licence.

This is where I need your help.

I'm currently working and won't the time to move down temporarily.
So I am proposing that a kind ACT/Canberrian would "rent" me a room, where I am then able to send over my relevant documents, and apply :)
I am willing to pay couple of hundred for this arrangement (as though I am renting a room).

  • From my experiences switching a NSW licence to the ACT, the Canberra Connect staff are very meticulous in checking your tenancy agreement and other ID documents. The tenancy agreement also must be prepared by a real estate agency, apparently. They also fax Service NSW a copy of your surrendered NSW licence and conduct checks on your driving record.

They will be pretty suspicious if you turn up with someone else's electricity bill (unless you're willing to pay the signup fees for ActewAGL too).

Overall, you need to ask yourself whether it's worth having someone else's address on your ID. You'll still run the risk of getting pulled over for driving at 110km/h or driving a P-restricted car if you're still on NSW number plates.

Maybe it'd be a good idea to move down to Canberra. It's actually pretty nice here!

After 3 months you'll need to transfer back to a NSW licence should you be living in Sydney.
In today's age with all the cross checking with other government departments they will easily work out your residential address.

I'm not but I'm curious… What car and what restrictions?

    Was it new or used?

I'd just sell it if I were you.
