  • "The fresh food people"

    • Confirmed! Their Odd bunch tomatoes were fresh in 1907.

Looking through them is an experience.

  • Huh.. Cool idea, hope it catches on. My youngest feels guilty when I tell her she can have a grape, so this is welcome! :P

    • They've been doing this since at least 2010. Possibly didn't work well in some stores, I know when I worked there we trialled it but the fruit went off before it was all taken, so we stopped doing it. It might only be in the larger stores/areas.

'we trialled it but the fruit went off before it was all taken, so we stopped…'

Erm… no one thought of simply putting out less? Sheesh.

        • If you put out 5 bananas and 5 bananas go off, then putting out less wouldn't fix the problem.

@tidus4eva: Well, yeah it does. If you put out 1 and 1 goes off, then you only lost 1 banana… :P

But I suppose the better way to market it would simply be - "FREE FRUIT FOR KIDS" and just let them take direct off the shelf instead of a designated area.

    1. I'm often told I'm a 'big kid'. Does that count?

    2. I'm gay, so does this amount to discrimination against homosexuals?

    3. If I put a banana down my pants does it amount to offensive conduct?

    4. Do I still need to pay for the banana if I don't have a small person with me? Or can I just tell them I'm doing my bit by not having children.

    • +1

      (1) Nope (2) Nope. Plenty of people don't have kids regardless of sexuality (3) Offensive is subjective but if you leave the store with it down your pants you still need to pay for it. (4) Yes you need to pay for it, they don't care about your family planning.

You could argue false advertising however as the girl has a pineapple and there isn't a basket for them.
Also I usually wash any apples I buy (in case someone put them down their pants)

For those wondering, my sarcasm switch was on.

They have this at Harris Farm too.

Yeah, they've had it there for some time…. felt bad when I took a peach but they looked so good!

  • Cumberland ww had it too, Kids loved it!

  • What a great idea. Wish they had this when I was a kid 20 years ago!

  • Coles Southland and Woolies at the Links also have it

  • Foodland Frewville (very close to the Unley Woolworths) has been doing the free fruit for a while. It's very close to Unley.

  • This is awesome, great work Woolies (and the others mentioned above that apparently also do it). I wish somewhere at Northland (Preston/VIC) would do it. I reckon the closest thing some of the kids I see there at the (always packed) Maccas and KFC have ever had to fruit would be a strawberry thick-shake.

    No watermelons :(

  • How they define kid? My parents always throw me the line. You always act like a kid. So I might go and get one if offer near me :)

  • Wow always see these but never realised they were free?

  • Saw this today at Woolworths Murray St Mall in Perth CBD - they had bananas and apples for the kids.

  • they do it at my local. One day i witness a 30 year old help him self to a few items by filling up his shorts (cargo).
i pointed it out to the manager on duty and she seen him slide a banana into his pocket!!
she said there was nothing they can do only to notify the police..
i watched him walk out with around 8 pieces of fruit..
