Looking for a decent DSLR body w/ lens, not looking to pay more than $500

Hi,

As per title. This will be my first DSLR, and I'm not too fussed if it's second hand, but I am looking for a bargain nonetheless.

The nifty fifty (50mm 1.8) is a beautiful lens that normally costs about $150. There are versions for Nikon and Canon (you don't mention which DSLR brand you use). It is a prime lens, which means there's no zoom, but the image quality is unbeatable for the price and the lack of zoom is great for beginner photographers to force them to think about framing.

I don't use any camera, the "w/" means "with" in this context :) i.e I'm after a DSLR body + lens package.

Also worth mentioning I won't be taking any environment shots or anything of that nature, mostly will be photos of products like phones and tablets.

Not a SLR, but the Sony RX100 mk1 is easily under 500 and you'll be hard pressed to find a difference between the pictures that and a mid-range DSLR take

Agreed. RX100 MK1 or ideally 2 would be perfect

you missed a couple of great deals, something should pop up soon though, I think you can get a Canon 600D body + a 50mm f/1.8 as @saine suggested. For your purpose, it's ideal, has good low light performance and incredible bokeh :)

I think the Canon is probably a better deal, but I bought the used and reworked with warranty Nikon d5100 w/ lens In the recent eBay sales. The price has gone up but still under $400. It is my first dslr but seems great. You can use Nikon hacks firmware upgrades to improve the body as well. A nifty fifty equivalent 1.8 35mm is another $250 atm. I don't know enough to say whether it is vital, but it does seem like a great lens and was on sale last month so maybe you could pick up a bargain prime lens later.

  • cheapest price for the sony rx100 mark 1? need it within 2 weeks..

  • Thanks all for your input. I ended up buying this, which hopefully is suitable for what I'm after :)
