Second Handset / Number for Business?

I am currently employed but am going to start working for myself in the new year. I would like to be able to structure my mobile phone services so that it is most cost effective but also tax effective.

I currently have an iPhone 5 and would like to upgrade to an iPhone 6.

My thinking is that if I use the one phone for both business and home then I can only split the purchase and usage costs according to usage. However, if I keep my current phone for private and buy an iPhone 6, then I can have the new phone as a business-only phone and have it tax-deductible. However, if I do that then I have 2 plans, two phones to lug around etc.

Any ideas about how I can structure this cost effectively? How do you guys do it?

  • Thank you for that - that's very interesting as I didn't know those sorts of things existed.

At this stage, it's not critical for me to have two numbers but I am trying to get the most cost effective solution and get a new phone to boot.

  • The easiest way would be, buy iphone 6, get a boost prepaid $40 a month. This is your new business phone
Message all personal contacts of your new number (business phone) .
    Sell old phone.

This is both cost effective and simplistic.

The magic sim is stupid ie only 1 active sim at a time, also only on iphone 5.

  • Thanks for that, it does sound simple and cost effective. The only downside I can see is that this phone is then going to only be maybe 20% tax deductable, rather than 100%

So with magicsim, I guess you can only activate one sim at a time to receive calls - huge downside.
