Optus, The Fastest ISP in Australia According to Ookla Speedtest. Thoughts?

Just saw this right now. According to Ookla Speedtest Awards, Optus is the fastest ISP in Australia.

Their methodology states they only take the Top 10% performers from each ISP. Not a very good sample imo.
But still citing download speeds of 180Mbps with Optus in Melbourne seems to be a stupid joke.

Would love to hear what my fellow OZBs think about this.

    Looks like they forgot to divide results by 10.

    TPG: 85.69/59.66Mbp. This is a joke.

    • Yeah, and Vodafone: 28.82/11.42 Mbps.
      That's certainly new..

      • Actually, i guess numbers on mobile network side looks okay to me since i was on voda few months back and was constantly getting around 40 Mbps.

        • Correct if I am wrong can you consider Vodafone as an ISP especially in the top 5? Mobile Networks, yes but putting them under ISP seems weird to me.

          @DrPotato:

          Correct if I am wrong

          Stubborn much :p

    • I think you may mean divide by 8 (8 bits = 1 byte).

  • That is just taking the cream of connections, and doesn't relate in any way to what most users will ever get. I struggle to get 30mbps dl/1.4mbps ul on Optus HFC. I don't pay the extra for a 'speedpack' but a year ago we were getting almost triple that speed on the same connection at the same address — seems like their local demand has grown a lot since then. Planning switch to TPG by years' end, given FTTN isn't coming this way soon enough, and Optus prices have increased year by year while most of their opposition dropped.

  • Seems like a dumb test.

  • I wish I could get a tenth of those speeds…
