Projector 3D and 4k

Any deals out there for a 3d projector that does 4k?

I cant substantiate buying a new tv as current tv fine so instead will buy a new projector.

Dunno why you would bother "investing" in 4k when that resolution has minimal support in Australia. You would be better off getting a decent 1080p one and in 5 years get a 4k, you would be heaps in front

Your needs may be different to OP but even taking that into account I fail to see any real validity in your point. 4K content is available and I don't understand why Australia would be less likely to receive 4K content than any other developed nation with the exception of technology power houses (Korea/Japan and the like). You can even watch Ghostbusters in 4K digitally remastered. 5 years and 8K will be standard although I suspect we will see a shift from total pixel count to pixels per inch (or metric equiv.) on devices as we are seeing with phones.

It's like saying 10 years ago that FHD isn't worth it. Better off sticking to HD or even SD cause there isn't enough FHD content available to justify your purchase but we saw how quickly the content was made available. While you wait for more 4K content a majority of devices will interpolate the source and up scale - think 1 pixel from source spaced every 4 pixels on screen and the skipped pixels are derived from the neighbours.

      • 10 years ago I did drop $4000 on a FHD TV and it was at least 4-5 years before I watched in FHD content. I wish I had bought a $1000 TV then and 4-5 years later another $1000 and still have the same quality of viewing. Local TV stations are only just starting to be broadcast in FHD, I cant see them dropping the coin for 4k anytime soon. To watch 4k you either need a really sweet internet connection to stream or be willing to be spending top dollar to buy them on disc. Having content made available is different to that content being considered the standard. Dont be fooled by up scaled material, yeah you can watch the original ghost busters in 4k but it was shot in SD you cant magically create pixels from thin air, remastered is never as good as true material shot in 4k.

Sure but let's be real … terrestrial TV will start broadcasting in 4K soon enough. The FIFA World Cup was televised in 4K. Realistically content delivery has shifted to an on demand streaming model and this will only become more and more pervasive.

On the topic of Ghostbusters though … apparently Sony thinks 4K digital remastered = 1080p source. So it's not 4K but FHD. Now before you go on about how this proves your point … remember it was shot in the 80's on analogue medium. There is 4Kable footage available from yesteryear but it will need analogue to digital conversion. Maybe 36mm film … not too sure.

          @kywst:
I think the point I am trying to make is paying top dollar to get 4k now could be better spent on FHD at 25% the cost and in a few years when technology is better and cheaper, then go 4k and it will still work out cheaper.

@cypher67: If you're watching TV still then yeah, sure. But there are other applications too. Gaming for example. 4K projectors are at least 4 times the cost but not 4K panels. These have already hit diffusion and the price is falling in line with FHD panels.

        • @kywst:
You game at 4K? Cant imagine that is on an XBone or PS4. And pretty sure we are talking projectors pricing here not panels. Id also rather get a decent brand FHD than a cheap 4k TV, but that's my preference. Im not saying not 1 should buy 4k yet, but you have to have deep pockets and a stellar internet connection to get any rewards from it.

@cypher67: Or a computer and a need for a high resolution with certain applications/games. You clearly know what you're talking about though so I'll bow out.

You played well and also made valid points, lets call it a draw.

    JVC DLA-RS4810 for under US$3500 …

A 4K projector of decent quality won't be cheap for a while yet … pretty sure the DMDs are still FHD and they combine them. I'm also pretty sure that Texas Instruments are the only real manufacturer of DMDs so this allows them to set their prices as opposed to the market setting the price.

  • Ok how about just a 1080o 3d orojector?

    • For a decent one you'll be in the AUD$ 1000-1500 range. Go into Hardly Normals and get them to give you the full(HD) run down and then look online for cheapest place to purchase the model you have chosen. Note that the price is roughly a quarter of the 4K option and coincidently 4 x FHD = 4K.

You can build your own projector sorta easily.

There is an amazing dude called "Photon3K" who used a 1800 x 2800 LCD from a Macbook pro retina and used that as the projector LCD, in the end he created a DIY Retina Projector @ 1800x2800 for less than USD$500. I think he used a powerful LED to beam light through the lcd onto a lens (magnifier) which then projected onto his wall.

The entire build was less than $500 I Believe

    • Definitely doable. The math surrounding the optics would be fun too. Cool find.

    • Noice! Gotta love the ingenuity of some hands on folk and appreciate them sharing their talents
