PostPay and ING 2% to pay bills - Break up transaction?

Hi,
As we all know the ING 2% cashback for paywave is limited to $99.99 - I am wondering, if I have a bill that's for example $300 - can I go to Australia Post (self checkout as to not annoy the attendant) and split the bill in multiple transactions under $100 (paying with ING paywave) and will ING treat them as separate transactions and give me the 2%?

Anyone tried this. I just got the ING card and would like to know if anyone has had success with splitting transactions.

Thanks

  • Not worth the hassle for 2% especially when a lot of company's charge $2 for post pay.
If you really need the coin break it up different amounts and different days.
Maybe sign up a partner too that way you paying with 2 cards
People have had accounts cancelled going crazy with the taps.

I do the same as peanut money does, with your $300 example i take my partner's card with me pay $80 from each card, then stop by a different PO on the way home (if convenient, otherwise another day) repeat the process with $70. By the way those self serve machines don't have pay wave enabled, (i've tried at 2 different locations, you may get lucky though).

    PS. avoid multiple $99 payments

I used to do this regular bill pay Insurance, Energy, Rates at post office(s) for the 5% cashback from ING, MEBank, Citibank until September this year. It is definitely worth doing it at 5% cashback. All those promotions cashback now used up! $90 is my trick with different post office

But I intend to stop now because it is only 2% left with ING. 2% is not worth the efforts to do payment IMO…

  • Most bills have a minimum 0.7% credit card fee. Paywave is considered credit even if ING Orange is a debit card account.
So your benefit is reduced to 1.3% and you have to split payment over multiple transactions/days.
Or you can pay all in one go (over the phone) with a credit card with points and get about 1% back in points value but you still pay 0.7% credit card fee.
Or you can Bpay from a bank account and pay
no credit card fee but you do not get any benefits.

  • Thanks guys. I guess if I do this, I have to be smarter by paying different amounts at different shops.. Which really is not worth the effort for 2%.

Good thing I checked before going nuts with this! It did seem too easy when it occurred to me.

    Thanks

  • Yes, I did this many times in other stores, it's fine, just don't cause a long queue behind you.

  • Tried this at my local post office, and they wouldn't let me…

If only the self serve machines had paywave…
