i7 Z170 Build - Case/Motherboard Guidance

Hi All,

Finally getting delivery of parts ordered with the AMEX Amazon offer and I'd completely forgotten about motherboard and case. (was planning to sort but got sidetracked).

My build so far is:

i7-6700K
H100i GTX
16GB DDR4 2666mhz (2x8GB)
980 Ti EVGA Hybrid
512GB Samsung 950 Pro x4 PCIe
850w EVGA G2 Power Supply

Any ideas on a best fit motherboard solution, features on them mean nothing to me, first build in a long time.
Any brands better than others?
I was considering mATX size with the ASUS Gene VIII but for the space saving I'm assuming future upgrades more limiting.
The only nice thing to have would be Wifi but i'm happy to get a PCIe Card for that.

Case wise, same deal, but I do have to factor in the H100i GTX and also the HybridGPU card cooling… My thoughts to have the H100i mounted at the front to pull in and the GPU as exhaust at the rear or top of the case with possibly another fan in rear/top.

Thanks in advance,

  • Oh, I do potentially see a need for Thunderbolt 3 in the future. This would be a nicety, I can only see specific to some Gigabyte motherboards at this time?
Would an add-on card for other motherboards be possible or is the bandwith at 40GB/s meaning it needs to be intergrated?

Also there are going to be new cases that will support USB Type C connectors externally — e.g InWin 805 that retails for $185 AUD.

But be careful to read the specifications carefully, as some cases like the 805 mentioned above just connect the front USB type C using the regular USB3.0 headers which means that even though the port may be Type C, it'll have none of it's features like 10 gigabit transfer speeds or a 100 watt power delivery.
