Work On Street Lights Has Led To Blowing Up Home Circuit Board

Hi. I just need some advice. We had electrical contractors from Endeavour Energy do some work on our street lights. They switched the electricity off for couple of hours when they changed the street light poles.

Two weeks later we turn on our ducted air conditioning and we find its not working. We called the service person and got told that because the electrical contractors reversed the 3 phase, it has led to the blowing up of the circuit board. Our air conditioning is 3 phase. (excuse my lack of terminology I am a nurse and not a handy women !!).

The company Endeavour Energy is giving me the run around. Saying we should have got a letter advising of the work, and everything should have been turned off at the PowerPoint, which it was anyway. They are saying they can't be held liable.

I am not sure how to proceed.

I've got an electrical licence, but I'm not an expert in supply side issues.

But it sounds like they are liable to me.

If it is a phase rotation issue, they should have tested the rotation of the phases before recommissioning the system. Simple as that, why didn't they follow recomissioning protocols? Ask them why this wasn't done, it's a simple test for a sparky and they should have a test meter(they have them for sale on Ebay for 13.99, TA can probably organise a bulk discount for Endeavour).

Also I'm Nnt sure what the actual fault was, if things have "blown up" it might have been something else like an earth or neutral short.

Also seems like they did not provide sufficient information for you to isolate your power supply.

The only way to isolate your power circuits is to switch it off at the mains.

Also sounds like a WHS issue if they are reconnecting residential dwellings without appropriate testing

I'd escalate the issue , get some compensation

    • Thank you very much. I will follow up on Monday.

  • Yep chase Endeavor Energy for the repair costs. They probably have a dedicated claims officer who will deal with your case. You might need a repair quote first. Then write to them making it clear that you are seeking compensation.

  • Their negligence, their fault, they must pay for the damages.

If you have insurance, make a claim and let the insurance company to deal with them.

If not, send them a letter of demand with quote of repair. Whether they are liable - if they did not make the change, the damage would not have occurred. They should have foreseen the issue and have the duty of care to ensure they do not cause damage.

The hardest is to establish your damage and direct cause from their repair. If it is like you say they have admitted, make sure you have their response documented by whom and when.

Go and knock on your neighbours doors find out if they got a letter. If they didn't you have good grounds

I'd also call back and say some of the things nrg2010 has said (claim your friend who's a electrician told you to ask them)
