International online order over $1,000

I'm looking to order something from Europe that's over the GST-free threshold. I'm not too sure about the process.

Say the product costs €1000 plus €100 shipping, total €1100.

Say exchange rate on the day of export is 0.64 (https://www.border.gov.au/Busi/Duty/Exch), so AUD equivalent is $1718.75.

10% of $1718.75 is $171.88, is that it? Any other duties?

What is the payment and collection process? At the post office or at the depot?

This is the breakdown of the government charges that I paid for importing AU$1381.60 (total inc shipping cost) worth of items:

Customs Duty $ 55 (5% of the total value of items. Shipping cost doesn't get charged custom duty)
Custom Entry Fee (Air) $ 40.20 (Fixed fee)
GST $138.16 (10% of total value)
AQIS - Entry Air Charge $ 16 (If AQIS deemed your item need to be treated, if not then no AQIS fee)

So you are not only paying for GST unfortunately.

Paying the fee depends on what carrier you are using. If Fedex is the carrier you are using, then its straight fwd. Fedex would clear the item for you for free and you just pay them the govt charges through the phone with your CC and they release and deliver the item to you. Other carrier, you might need to find a custom broker and you need to pay custom broker fee on top of the other fees. Final step should be your custom broker advising your carrier the govt charges has been paid and your carrier can finally re assume delivery to your door step.
