Recommended Place to Get Spare Toyota Corolla Key in Melbourne South East

Hi guys,
just bought a used 2010 corolla and I notice i only been given 2 keys. One is black with remote key (which I assume master) and the other one is grey coloured (which I assume is the valet one). I'm thinking of getting another key (the one with remote) as a backup.

Just wondering if you guys have any recommendation place to go to to get an affordable spare key in Melbourne south east preferably ?

Hi, it's a corolla and year 2010, therefore it should be available easily from any key master or cobbler cum key duplicate services available in most shopping centre or shopping complex. Good luck hunting. Also, please specify how "affordable" you're looking into, as if $100 is affordable to you it might be affordable at all to some. Being more specific can cut off more of your time reading and replying and posting etc. ;)

    • Hello, thanks for the tips. I'm not too sure how much I need to spend but hopefully it's something below $200 ?
With this duplicate key, does it come with the remote or just the key ?

you can have it both, normally people only need 1 remote, the rest only "chipped" key. However i think you might need to spend around more than 200 at least for a "chipped" key cut. Key cut without chip can only be used to open the door of your car, and i doubt that you can start the car with it. This is the good thing of having immobilizer. I remember i had this in my corolla year 2006. Therefore i can't think of why your 2010 will not be having immobilizer. Not sure where you are located in the south east, however you can always try Springvale, you can find many good stuff with cheaper price than anywhere else.

        • I live close by to springvale, I might give it a shot actually thanks for that. :)

        • @p4r4m31c1um: it would be appreciated if you can post your outcome as well, it might be useful for other people in the future as a reference.

I had a key cut for my Ford Territory recently at the place at Forest Hill…downstairs near Woolworths…from memory it was approx. $120 which was $30 less than I had been quoted at Chadstone and The Glen… hope that helps :)

    • Thnks for that. And this key come with the remote as per your original key or just the key (valet key) ?

      • +1

It was just the key…no remote.

You already have 2 keys,I don't really understand why you need another one for ? As you may sell your car later on,why waste money for another unnecessary key ?

I guess I'm just being paranoid :/, just wanna make sure I'm covered if I lost it.

I lost one of my spare key on my other car last year while I was visiting my wife, luckily I still have a spare one at home that I can use.
I remembered I have a total 3 keys that time, and one of them is valet key.

I have a second hand Subaru Forester MY07. It only came with one key. Subaru quoted $600 for a new one. My mechanic quoted $500.

A friend with a Toyota Landcruiser took his key swimming. It cost $1000 for a replacement.

    Car keys have four functions:

    1. door locking / unlocking by turning

    2. Remote locking / unlocking - most are still (A) push button but some are by (B) proximity

    3. Immobiliser deactivation - usually by proximity these days

    4. Ignition - most are still (A) turn but some are (B) proximity plus push button on dashboard

This is why they claim they are so expensive but if you can get a vastly more complicated full function mobile phone for say $100 I think they are a total ripoff.

If you want to go swimming and leave the full function key inside the vehicle you can get a type 1 key from any key cutting place for a few dollars. Also useful to wire up under the vehicle so if you lose the key you can at least get into the vehicle while waiting for recovery.

I got 2 type 1, 2A, 3 keys for $150 from a guy on Gumtree for $150 each in Perth.

On the Subaru forums there are references to how to program a type 2 fob but I reckon I can live with being old school and if necessary unlock the car manually.

Why would I want spare keys?

I went bush biking with half a dozen mates in the desert 1000 km from Perth and lost the key. I was just about to re-climb the scrub covered hill to try and find it when my friend tapped me on the shoulder and asked "Are you looking for this?". We had a recovery trailer with us so the bike could have got back to Perth.

I was parked in the city and returned to the work vehicle just before the clearway activated. There was a hole in my pocket and I had lost the key. It was pre-mobile phones so I had to find a public phone box to phone a mate in the office and ask him to get the spare key from Transport and bring it down. The parking inspector had given me 15 minutes grace. My mate arrived just in time.

As I was getting to the car I dropped the key on a drain grate. It bounced off.

Because of my experiences losing or nearly losing car keys I have all of my keys on a chain attached to my belt. I worry that I might get out of the vehicle without removing the key so I have a magnetic circuit breaker ($2 on eBay).

Even so, I could still snap off the key so that's why I have the type 1 key wired under the car.

Split ring key rings are extremely insecure. A $1 LED micro-torch disappeared off my key ring the other day.

I use 1mm steel cable with glued screw closers (5 for a dollar on eBay) to hold my keys.

My partner says I am paranoid. I say I am an engineer and I do risk assessment and try and mitigate the risks.

    • Last year we were at Karajini NP in the Pilbara. There are several places in the gorges where you have to wade through the water.

I stayed back with the keys, watches, phones, PC and my camera. While waiting I warned others about the risk to their car keys.

My partner took her camera. Despite my suggestion that she hold the camera above her head and sacrifice herself if she slipped she slipped and immersed and destroyed the camera. I have now bought waterproof enclosures for the cameras.

If she had had the at the time only car key in her pocket we would have been stranded 2000 km from home. I don't think RAC recovery stretches that far.

    • Oops. That should have been a type 1, 3, 4A key.

We had one cut for our Toyota interstate. One of those keys is a Master key - from mem the grey one. They needed it when getting car to accept new key. Turning on car turning it off, opening & closing door x times etc etc (starting with grey key swapping to new key as they went). I suggest taking both when getting it cut - just in case

    • do they program the remote as well ?

  • +1

Yes, was part of the process.

Ours was expensive and had to be done by a locksmith (came to our car), they were the same crowd that Toyota use. Our prob was that we didn't have the master key needed to tell the car that the new keys were legit. Should be cheaper for you as you do. Locksmith said that the SW was $14k just for Toyota. Sorry I can't remember the cost, partner paid - was for a 06 Yaris.

It is possible for you to do the process needed for the car to accept new key.(on/off +doors etc) No point me telling you what was done in our case as it is different for different years/models.

I'd suggest you check out/search Whirlpool's car forum. Or some of the AU Toyota forums. They have more info.

  • Just an update. I spoke to 3 different Toyota branch and they want around $300 ish for key replacement. Pretty much they charge for $214 for the blank key, $60 key cut, $77 programming the key.

I have contacted a local locksmith that I used in the past for a quote and he mentioned he would charge around $70-100 for cut and programming however I would have to wait till around December since he is getting newer machine so I guess I might try that path.

  • These guys do it pretty cheap and they have a blog post about it, use it as you will
