Issue with Work Shifts

So my girlfriend works at Childcare as early childhood teacher and so far her shifts were 7:30-4 mon-fri but she has been told that from next week she'll have to do 7:30-4 mon-wed and 9-6 thu-fri.

to me it sounds like oh&s issue, broken sleep pattern, fatigue etc is there any way how she could, fight this?

Is she full time and was the working hours specified in her contract?
Frankly, I don't think it is unreasonable with the nature of the work.

I don't think you could fight it in basis of fatigue and broken sleep patterns.

    Sure. Get a new job.

She's an early child care teacher. They are the standard hours. If she values her job, she'll just deal with it. After all, it is only an hour and a half.

Reading between the lines and with all due respect, it sounds like there is a sense of entitlement there.

Haha, you think they are broken sleep patterns. Ask a true shift work what broken sleep is. I would love that, sleep in for Thurs and Fri.

Yes. Give me a break op. I worked 12 hour shifts. 2 days then 2 nights.

You want to talk about broken sleep patterns. There. Thats broken sleep patterns between the 2 days followed by the 2 nights.

    • Yep.
In fact my old workplace used a similar roster to REDUCE fatigue.
1st day started at 5am and each day got later until the 5th day started at 8pm.
Was a prick to organise a social life around, but from a fatigue point of view it worked extremely well.

    These hours seem quite delightful!

  • Lol broken sleep pattern when you get to sleep for an extra 2hours…

You have no idea what you're taking about. Highest order of the first world problems.

  • I work 40 hours in 4 x 10hr shifts Monday to Sunday. I'd kill for these hours at my work!

Come on mate, tell her to take some concrete pills and enjoy her cruisy job working with the little kids.

Had 2 full time jobs and a part time job at the same time last year, gotta do what ya gotta do.

Noone is going to care about her sleep patterns, that's for her to deal with.

As others have mentioned, suck it up or leave.

  • If she can't handle it, then give the job to someone else. There are too many unemployed who would love a job. When I was a trainee I often worked an extra 2-7 hours each day ontop of my existing 38 hour week. My overtime rate was still worse than my colleagues. Sometimes you just gotta suck it up and appreciate how lucky you are.

  • "7:30-4 mon-wed and 9-6 thu-fri."

I am sorry but I don't see a problem? Unless it is 7:30PM-4AM mon-wed and 9PM-6AM thu-fri." Most people work that kind of hours anyways. I know people who regularly stay back 1-2 hours unpaid.
