Bathroom Drainage Cost Seems Expensive

I have leaking toilet drain pipe. The plumber inspected subfloor area today and advised that we had old style cast iron drain pipes and some of them are not connected properly. The toilet pipe has also got leakage.

He quoted $5000 including GST to install all new drain pipes for vanity, shower and toilet. He will also connect it to the sewer which is running close to the toilet however it requires taking out concrete. They will put a new concrete after installation.

Is it reasonable cost to install new drainage for bathroom?

  • Call in another plumber and tell him what needs to be done and obtain a second quote. Don't tell him the first quote is $5,000 otherwise he will just quote you slightly lower. The second quote will be your best guide.

    • This is my 2nd quote and both have quoted around $5,000.

The problem is I have already spent $80 on call out fee. Should I take another quote?

      • +1

The biggest question is are you will to spend thousands to do a full job when you only wanted to do a patch job? If you can afford to spend around $5,000 for a full job you should get a third quote. Otherwise stick to the original plan and only get a quote for the leaks.

      • To be honest, if they are both quoting the same, then its probably not going to change with another plumber

Concrete removal and new concrete are quite expensive, surprisingly so. You never really consider demo to be much of an expense, but i had quotes for $2-3k just to remove 60m2 tiles from my house, i.e more than the cost of relaying the entire floor!

But remember that if you save yourself $500-1000, I'm sure you won't mind having spend another $80

  • A lot of plumbers do free quotes…kind of surprised that you're paying callout fees.

All I can recommend is don't use sites like serviceseeking.

Bathroom work is quite expensive - especially plumbing. $5000 for replacing the drainage system sounds about right. If you're in Sydney, I can recommend a very good plumber who we have used.

    • I will love to have someone giving free quotes but nobody is willing to get into subfloor area and crawl 50 metres to check the bathroom piping for free.

Can you share details of your plumber?

  • No idea on price - I like to ask how many days they think it'd take to get done. If they quote $5k and will be done in a day you know they're having a toss. If it'll take a week it's probably reasonable. Complicates it a bit if it involves a 3rd party concreter for example, he might be $2k of that.

  • Go shout a few plumbers some drinks at the pub one arvo get in nice n close and get it done for mates rates.

Alternatively for that amount of money do a plumbing course or such and repair the leaking part yourself.

  • I know a really good plumber if you need one. He is a cutie as well.
