How Do You Feel About Splitscreen? Which Games / Series / Genres Do You Believe Should Have It?

Hi everyone, recently I was considering buying Halo 5 (I don't have an Xbone but I do have a PS4) to play with my older brother who was set to return to Australia at the end of this year. I wanted to do it as a thankyou for playing Halo games with me when i was younger and introducing me to the series. Obviously, as splitscreen was nixed (apparently quite necessarily as the Xbone can barely hit 60 even with quite a few tradeoffs as it is) a lot of people (including myself) were somewhat outraged and disappointed over this, especially since Halo is considered THE Splitscreen game. I didn't play many games when I was younger but Halo was always my go to game and living in a large family was one of the few we could play together.

Anyway, more to the point what so you guys think about splitscreen? I don't mean just 'most people don't use it anymore' but what kind of games should still keep it and why you think that is. Personally, I think if the game can afford it and its in the genre of shooter/ racer then why not? Obviously this isnt possible for all games and for some it would make no sense, but after all Splitscreen isn't really just a poor man's excuse for online play, it provides an entirely different experience than online, especially because its more personal.

This is my first Ozbargain post BTW, so please don't eat me. :)

  • Skyrim/Fallout

Do away with the retarded NPC follower and have a slightly more intelligent friend controlling your pack mule

    • I haven't properly played Fallout before so I don't really know how that would work. I think it would be a little boring for the second player though givent that they can't play the same way you do.

Amen brother. Fable 2 is a testament to this. One player is the 'player-proper' and player two is the combat clinger-on, and does nothing but stuff up the camera for the whole game.

  • I wish we had more good split screen games. I got some xbox 360 wireless controllers for PC to play racing games, and found how much more fun it is to have your friend playing in the same room as you instead of over a headset. Now got Rocket League and its a lot of fun with 4 players pushing and swearing at each other on a big screen tv split 4 ways.

But unfortunately they are few and far between.

    • Welcome to the xbone and PS4 generation, Microsoft decided that frames were more important than couch co-op for a console that's less than half as popular as its competitor. They didn't think "Well, maybe all their friends have PS4's, so they might like to come over and play Halo 5 with each other! THen those people might like to buy an xbone!"

Besides, every next gen game is a sandbox, and couch co-op/competitive doesn't work for open world.

  • Ikr? I was actually looking at Rocket League to play with my younger Bros, but first I need another 3 PS4 controllers.

The thing that annoys me most is when the console version has split screen but they remove it from the pc version :'(

    • Battlefront?

      • I was thinking more like Borderlands and Portal and such :(
