Nice! Was NYC $1100 on Qantas? Good deal for return.
As above they do exist only nothing like the deals/prices you see in Nov/Mar etc. I find they are usually just before school holidays or on dates before Christmas like the 22/23/24 Dec. Return flights are fairly cheap after the 15th Jan. Start looking around September however I have seen good 'deals' as early as May.
As a guide cheapest I have booked to SFO/LAX is $1550 return (Air NZ) most expensive $2200 return (Virgin/Delta).
Quick tip - Dont just look for direct/connecting flights to NYC, it can often be cheaper to fly to Boston or Philly and catch an Amtrak train instead. It's a good train ride too.

I'm flying to New York for the Holidays this year, I've booked my airfare way back in February (You can typically only buy air tickets 11-12 months in advance)
There was some error on United's website, booked my tickets for $1600 return (see https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/184793)
I've been keeping an eye on it pretty much all year. If you're thinking of travel between Dec 15 and January 15, airfare will always be north of $2000 (Qantas, Virgin, Delta or United) Before or after those dates I've seen them as low as 880 to get to LA or about $1100 for NYC.
