$28 Gold Coast Hotel: Genuine Deal or False Advertising Bait and Switch?

Got an email today saying up to 75% off hotels and it states the Islander Resort Hotel is available for $28. However, when I click through for details it is offering it to me for $94.

The email is also promoting $22 per night in Sydney but I can't seem to find anything at that price either.

Have a look at the email yourself and see if you can figure out how to get these $20 to $30 rates…

Is this just blatant false advertising or were they truthfully offering rooms for $28 a night?

This wouldn't be the first example of a hotel sale bait and switch either. Even the big Accor Hotels chains seem to have grossly exaggerated sales: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/218697

Is the travel industry getting away with consistent breaches of the consumer law?

The price in the top right corner is a $/night average.

Presumably there's some combination of dates wherein you could achieve $22 per night, albeit a very difficult, secretive combination of dates.

I'd ask them to show their working, and if they "umm and ahhh", mention how their inability to advise seems to lend itself to the misleading nature of their promotion. That'd be my plan.

Haha spent an hour with them back and forth on the web chat. They didn't say it's sold out they just told me they can't search by price.

Amy could not find anything at these rates and further told me the rates don't include fees and charges, which would indicate a breach of the consumer law. When I accused them of bait advertising she did not deny it but just disconnected me. She advised me to email them, which I have. I know they received my email, hopefully they reply to it.

Love the threats, seriously the person in the chat just cbf dealing with you. Report them to the accc, fair trading, afp, etc. other wise, move along.

        • Whats the point of reporting them to the ACCC when they are not an Australian company.

  • The Islander is a shithole, it's part hotel and part backpackers so the $28 a night is likely to be in a dorm room.

    Don't stay there. Trust me.

    • The image to sell $28 is of a hotel room with two beds. Anyways I like staying in backpackers.

      • Not this one you won't, not unless you're quite partial to spending your night with the odd rat.

  • this is where all the schoolies stay

    • Schoolies stay at the Hiltons too.
