Building is always cheaper. Sounds like you could probably do it without much fuss.
Do you have a mate or anyone who has done it before who can give you a hand if you get stuck though? Even just someone you can call?

I dont have amanx or whatever its called

    A What?

    Do you mean Amex?

    • yes i meant amex sorry

go to the whirlpool forums and start a thread with your desired use: monitor size/resolution, games you want to play, other tasks it should do.

So here is the forum you want to be in.

Here is the data you need to fill in, read this page so you can post good info and get a god reply.

Here are generic recommendations for each use type. Pretty good place to start.

I would read through the recommendations and see what else you want.

Building is not hard, but you want to go slow, and watch some youtube vids of doing it first.

      Yep sounds like Whirlpool.

First question is - What is your budget ?

Select Australia from the list and it can give you an idea of what you can get for your budget.

You should read up on how to build your own and then do it. Just make sure the parts are fully compatible.

Building your own PC especially when you are a noob is extremely satisfying. I built my own 4 years ago and never regretted it.

  • I think im gonna build my own PC, any good cheap stores or stores that have parts on sale normally? Online or instore.

    • RAM can be sourced cheaply from various online shops with free delivery options. e.g Shopping Express. sometimes even Amazon deals show up, but you have to have AMEX to take advantage of offers.

RAM is RAM and the brand doesn't matter, so don't get sucked into buying the 'premium' stuff.
eBay is a good place to buy RAM because you can get cashback and there are often percent discount vouchers so wait for those.
Get yourself a Cashrewards account if you don't already have one

For everything else, if you spot a good deal on SSD's on the ozbargain front page, snap it up.

CPU's, graphics cards, motherboards and power supplies are generally the same price everywhere so there's no need to hunt for it, but use Static Ice website for price comparisons.

  • MSY is cheap and they have stores around most of Australia. Their stock is somewhat limited but usually sufficient. But if your budget is at the lower end of the spectrum, second hand will probably get you more bang for buck.

  • You still haven't given a budget.

What do you want to use the PC for?

    • What do you want to use the PC for?

Ahem. Read the title a few more times.

  • Probably around 700 or less. I already have a 770 4gb gpu. Is buying a second hand custom pc with no os bad?

    • Its not bad, its just that we are afraid to get a faulty parts along with the pc, so it might not worth it

    MSI Z170M MORTAR LGA 1151 micro-ATX Motherboard
Kingston Hyperx Fury 8GB 2x4GB DDR4 Kit Black
Seagate Barracuda ST1000DM003 1 TB 3.5" Internal Hard Drive
    Sandisk SSD 250GB
    770 Asus 4GB GPU
ASUS DRW-24D3ST 24x Internal OEM DVD Burner Drive
Intel Core i5 6600K Quad Core LGA 1151 3.5 GHz Unlocked CPU Processor
Corsair VS Series 650W Power Supply
Does this all work ? and is this any good setup

    • The i5 6600K does not come with a heatsink fan. You will need to source your own. I can recommend the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO. It has good reviews to back it up.

    • Furthermore, I think you may have blown your $700 budget with the configuration you've listed.

      • Seems like

        • If you're trying to keep costs down, your CPU/MB combo is way more expensive than necessary.

          CPU: Intel Core i5 6400 $259
          Mobo: ASUS B150M-A D3 $135

Unlike the i5-6600K, the i5-6400 CPU comes with a perfectly suitable heatsink and fan too.

Changing to the above will give you saving of about $200 over your proposed setup, for a virtually imperceptible decrease in gaming performance. The only downside is that you can't overclock your processor later - but it probably won't matter since your GPU is going to be the limiting factor for gaming performance anyway.

Also, do you really need a DVD drive? Most people don't these days.

        • @klaw81: idk i5-6400 seems little weak

        • @shadowrukia: CPU power is not important for most games - maybe 4-5 frames per second for modern games. Considering the price (~$100 extra) the difference in performance is virtually nil.

GPU power is a much bigger factor, and will be the major hardware component that will determine your gaming capability.

Have a look at the difference in performance in this GTA V benchmark:
          http://www.kitguru.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/GTA-V.png

As you can see, the performance difference between "slow" 3.5Ghz and "fast" 4.7Ghz processors is a measly 2 frames per second. Totally not worth the extra cash.

If you're concerned that the i5-6400 is a bit lacking in grunt, the i5-6500 is about $40 more for about 500Mhz speed increase. Some believe it's a smarter choice, but I can't see the value in it for gaming.

        • @klaw81: wow your right, thanks but still thinkig about getting it, can get it cheap and it will boost up value of my pc

  • ok so this is actually my build

Corsair Carbide 500R Mid Tower Black ATX Case
Cooler Master Hyper 212X CPU Cooler

Kingston Hyperx Fury 8GB 2x4GB DDR4 Kit Black
Intel Core i5 6600K Quad Core LGA 1151 3.5 GHz
    MSI 970 GXT
MSI H170A Gaming Pro LGA 1151 Motherboard
    Sandisk SSD 250GB

Got the 970 pretty much free

Is this any good? will the 600watt be fine?

    • No point having an overclockable processor (6600k) without having a motherboard that will permit overclocking (need Z170, not H170).

Either pony up for a higher spec motherboard, or go to a non-K CPU (and probably ditch the CPU cooler).

      • Damnit! already bought the motherboard. wth its for gaming and costs over 240 it cant overclock??

        • Gaming doesn't mean over-clocking. As I explained above, CPU performance has very little to do with gaming performance. Most gamers don't bother with over-clocking - it just adds heat stress and system instability for very little gain.

Here's an explanation of the difference between H170 and Z10
          http://www.ukgamingcomputers.co.uk/h170-and-z170-difference-…

I've you've already bought your 6600K CPU, it will work fine on that motherboard, but won't allow you to overclock.
If you haven't bought it, I suggest you go for the 6600 (non-K) and save $30.

        • @klaw81: Yea I already bought it, Stupid that MSI has overclocking listed on the ad for their motherboard that you cant even overclock it! isnt that super false ad?

        • @shadowrukia: It comes with the software :-) And it can (allegedly) also control OC for the GPU, so it's not false - just a bit misleading.

        • @klaw81: I got it for 325 anyway
