How do people buy suits online without trying them on first? I find that even the same size on the label of the exact same pants and style can result in a slightly different waist and length … the differece can mean either having to have them adjusted (added expense and inconvenience) or not. Plus I like to look at the build quality of each one as again I have seen some shoddy work even from premium brands (may be they were the last one being stitched together before beer-oclock on a Friday)

Basically comes down to being a consistent size and buying reliable brands. All my suits come from MyHabit or Bluefly and are brands like Versace and Armani. I pay around $500 for a $2000 rrp suit and budget $120 for well tailored alterations, which should be invested in for any decent suit. I've never heard of a suit not needing adjustment, but I guess some cheap shit comes in separates where that could happen.

      • Do I just go to a decent tailor and ask them to fit me to it or do I need to specify which alterations I want done?

Firstly, your suit size is the same as your shirt size. So I'm a 42". Weirdly, that's 52" in Italian sizes. You can run a soft tape measure around your neck to get that measurement (the 42", not the weird arse Italian: just add ten for that). then it's just about regular, long or short. That applies to jacket and pant length.

Then buy the suit, go to a trailer, try it on and say "make it look right please". Not one of these mall places, as they WILL ruin your jacket if any alterations are required there. I have two places in Melbourne CBD that I go to and I wouldn't go elsewhere for jacket stuff. For me that's normally sleeve shortening, where a crap place could stuff up the button placement.

I recently bought x3 pairs of suit trousres in Myer (Sydney) & thought I would give their instore tailor a try due to convenience & also because they gave me a 15% off voucher. Big mistake. None of the trousers were suitable to wear.
