Telstra Prepaid for Roaming - 3 Weeks

Hey guys,

Looking at heading overseas to Asia for a holiday soon.

Luckily my post paid contract expires right when I leave. I was wondering what is the cheapest way to get some basic calls and data for roaming use.

I was thinking on porting to a telstra prepaid sim ($30 for $10 deals) and buying a couple more to topup so I have $90 for $30 that I can use when overseas.

I will probably get a local sim when I get there but would like to keep my Australian phone active as well for incoming calls (which I usually have to pay for as well).

Is there a specific telstra plan I should sign up for like: Telstra Freedom Plus $30 Recharge =>$700 Call Credit, $40+ => Unlimited, + Bonus 5GB Anytime https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/218889

When I get back ill be porting to the Amaysim deals.

Thanks

  • Maybe Vodafone on a month-to-month arrangement and take advantage of the $5 roaming.

Any bonus Telstra give you will disappear the minute you leave the country. Also, Telstra is probably the worst when it comes to roaming costs…

Thanks, wasn't aware of it. From what I gather if I sign up for one of their $40 plans, I can basically use all that included allowance when overseas for $5 a day. It looked appealing but ends up being more expensive. If I use roaming for 4 days. my bill I get at the end will be $60. Its good for heavy users who will basically make heaps of calls and use data in those 4 days. If you use for a whole month (30 days) you will get a total bill of 190 (40 + 150 roaming)

  • Vodafone is better for roaming

    Trust me :D

    • Are you referring to the prepaid $1 a min rates or coverage?

  • Its better for you to just buy a sim overseas, it will be a hell of a lot cheaper if you are going for 3 weeks.

OP says: "I will probably get a local sim when I get there but would like to keep my Australian phone active as well for incoming calls (which I usually have to pay for as well)."

  • Thanks guys. Seems like voda is the cheapest with the call rates at $1 a min for incoming/outgoing. coupled with the recent $50 credit for 22 dollars (missed out on the $16 discount) it will be more than enough for my trip.
