Cheapest or Best Value FHD, i5 or Similar Processor, 8GB Ram Laptop Available Currently?

I'm going overseas next week and need a laptop. I purchased one from the Dell Outlet but unlike many I got one that has some issues so it has to be returned and now I'm in a bit of a rush to find something else. I was about to pull the trigger on that Inspiron deal on here the other day but it expired at 7pm while I was half way through ordering it before the price increased. So basically I'm having a bad stretch of luck trying to get something good at a reasonable price.

I just need something for general computing and to do some work (web development) on. So I don't need a graphics card but I do want a FHD screen and 8GB RAM as I can't see myself getting by without those two things, and a decent processor (eg an i5) would be good too. Any suggestions as to where I might find the cheapest or best value option? Normal laptop is fine, but also don't mind spending more for an ultrabook.

I did see the Asus at Dick Smith today on here but that was probably a bit too much for me, I don't need a discrete graphics card and I'm happy with a 5th gen i5 if it saves me money as opposed to the 6th gen i7 that was in the Asus.

  • Lenovo E550 or E560

    • Honestly the only one of the Edge series that seems a good deal (after student discount), is the e450.

The other issue is it takes 6 business days apparently. Unless you meant getting it elsewhere and not the lenovo site?

Also aren't these kind of ugly?

They're designed to be able to take a few knocks and small drops.
The keyboard is spill resistant. The casing is anti-fingerprint and resists (if only a little) scratching. The hinge is well built.

Basically, the E4xx series are sort of the poor-mans ruggedised laptop, while they're not as tough as the proper T450 series they are made to be functional workhorses rather than dainty fashion laptops with crappy build quality which starts falling apart after a year of rigorous use.

Overall, they're not 'great', just Average-good in terms of quality and features but for the price they go at, they are perfectly competent machines for work and make a much better choice than most of the crap that Dick Smith is selling.

  • unless you're getting a laptop with a 32" screen FHD is a waste of money. You'll also need really good eyesight to read the small text while web browsing. You can of course zoom the pages but not all web pages display correctly when doing so.

    • +1

I get that argument, but I disagree with it TBH. I really hate HD laptops.

  • another tip to save some money is to get one with 4gb ram and upgrade it to 8gb yourself.

  • MSY is selling ACER Aspire V3-572G-77T0 for $879. FHD, i7-5500u, 2GB Nvidia GT840M dedicated graphic card and AC wifi. I find the specs to be very reasonable at this price, only if you don't mind the brand though because some would believe ACER is a bit at the low end of the industry. Might want to do your own research.
