Lets Talk Wi-Fi/Smart Home Security

I'm moving into my new place in the next month and I would like to have some form of home security.

I've had a look and seen there are things like the Scout Alarm and iSmartAlarm which are not supported in Australia yet (however i dont see why not, except for monitoring).

What I would like is something that would link to my phone so I get alerts when something is triggered.

Features I would like would be:

  • Door triggers
  • Camera
  • Motion Sensor
  • smoke detector
  • Some form of physical arming of the system without needing to rely on phone

Operation on batteries are preferable at this stage as I dont know if its a long term solution.

Both my partner and I have iphones so homekit would be nice too.

I noticed Belkin wemo might be introducing a line of security products in the near future and they said homekit support is coming soon too. But not sure when that might be.

What are your thoughts? Anyone used anything similar?

  • in regards to cams around the house i feel they stand out too much, i do have a few setup around the house, but i find the best thing is to grab yourself a couple cheap phones put and ip cam app on them and then conceal them on a bookshelf behind something

    • Yea. I don't want obvious cameras around the house.

I just want one that I can hide on a book case

IP phone is a good idea. Got a iPhone 3 sitting around somewhere

  • I installed the Aldi security Kit from two years ago.. hopefully its improved. It drained all the batteries really quickly and I dont think its the best kit anyway. But it was only $100… and its been cheaper since…

It has motion sensors, couple of window/door sensors and an 'alarm' (which might alert a slightly close by person).

The WeMo thing looks too expensive… Ive seen a few of those products.

This market is something I'm very interested in… I think we will see a lot more of it in the future, and its all part of the 'Internet of Things'

    • Yup no one has made a mature product yet. Maybe asking too soon
