Decent Modem Router with good range - Also good if it can do NBN

Hey guys,

My modem router has shit itself and I am currently on ADSL2+, Hoping to get NBN about halfway through next year…

I am in need of a new one to get me through atleast until then and it would be awesome if the new router could do the NBN as well…
Good range is quite important as my desktop PC is at the other end of the house and I use another router at that end as a bridge for the PC…

Other than that I just need something decent, hopefully looking at $150 or less ideally

Cheers

  • There will no doubt be some superior newer models, but Ive had the Netgear N600 for a while, and it has done both for me (ADSL 2+ and now NBN).
Its in your price range and is on special at Dick Smiths atm.
Range is okay, and functionality/features are pretty well configurable.

  • I have had the same situation pup up - I am looking at something like this - https://www.pccasegear.com/products/22752

    • May I ask what you need 3 WAN ports for? My understanding is that connecting a modem to a router is via the WAN port…

I don't have a modem, so I need a router with an inbuilt one, So I don't really need any WAN ports do I?

      • To be honest I am not sure, I would get this one instead but it doesn't seem to be NBN compatible - https://www.pccasegear.com/products/15723

        • You are correct. No WAN port.
If you are getting FTTP, then almost any recent ADSL Router with a WAN port will be fine. Look for one with both 2.4 and 5Ghz. TP Link Archer D5 and D7 are fine.

If you are getting FTTN/FTTB, you may be at the mercy of your RSP. There is also legislation about enforcing VDSL standards, AU edition that will be through next year, so you cannot 100% depend on a current ADSL router that supports VDSL2+ being allowed after that goes through. Be very care full of your RSP selection, as there are some gotchas with some and voip.

      • So I don't really need any WAN ports do I?

Yeah you do, if you want it to be NBN compatible. I'm not sure if you are getting FTTP, FTTN or FTTB but either way there will be new equipment required that you will need to connect to the WAN port if you want to use your existing router.

The built in modem in most of the routers these days is only ADSL2+. There are some that are VDSL compatible that will work with FTTN, but to future proof you are better off buying something with an ADSL2+ (at a minimum) modem AND a WAN port.

        • Cool, most of them all have a WAN point anywhere, cheers dude
