Dell Have Double Shipped My Monitor. What Should I Do?

Hi guys,

About 2 weeks ago I ordered a new monitor from Dell ($900 total) after talking to one of their live chat agents. I was only charged once for this item. When I got home today, I was pleasantly surprised to see that I had in fact been sent TWO of these monitors. Should I do the right thing and tell Dell, or is it fair game to sell the monitor I don't need?

Your help is much appreciated :)

Matt

You're obliged to tell Dell. And if you don't but they somehow work out their error, you'd better have it!
There's a fair chance they'll tell you to keep it or buy it at heavy discount.

This same error happened with my order a few years ago with some Printers I had ordered.
They shipped the order, then a week alter the same order arrive by courier!
I informed them of this and they said that it was a order processing system error and that I could keep the item for free (as return courier charges would be to high at their cost)!

  • Dual monitor setup! You have to tell them but you don't have to return it - they must arrange to have it picked up, if they don't come and get it within a reasonable time it's legally yours to sell.

  • I'd say tell them then hope for the best i.e. they let you keep it.
If that turns out to be the case then I'd probably be interested in purchasing it ;)

  • keep it. they're a big company and this won't be noticed.

Somebody will notice the stock shrinkage when there's an audit, e.g there are 100 monitors in warehouse, 50 were shipped, but only 49 remain. So somebody will eventually notice, just not immediately.

      • hmmmm….good point.

  • Must be a dell thing, happened to my ex years back! No idea if he told them or not but he definitely kept the extra laptop.

What would you do if it was a small business? You'd take pity and return it because you know it's the right thing to do.
Dell is a company that started off small and through the hard work of lots of people over a long time, it's become big. Do the right thing, call them and ask what they want - obviously they have to pay the pick up etc and the time needs to be convenient to you.

My rule of thumb is what would my Nanna think of me if she found out what I'd done…

…my poor Nanna, I've killed her 10000 times over with my shoddy choices :)

This situation is covered on the ACCC website under 'receiving things you didn't ask for'

    The short version is:

-if you contact the business in writing, expressing that you do not want the products, then the business should recover the products within one month
-if you don’t contact the business, then the business may recover the products within three months from the day after you received the products

and if they don't recover the item in the given timeframe:

-If the supplier does not collect the unsolicited products within the above timeframes, you can keep the products with no obligation to pay.

I found myself in a similar situation a little while ago. I had ordered a small first aid kit from Officeworks. Rather than getting one, I got a BOX of them. I notified them in writing of their mistake (via email) and they basically stuffed around, passed my email around various departments, misunderstood what I was saying etc. After a month had passed and they hadn't got their act together, I emailed again informing them that as per the ACCC page, their one month was up and the goods were now mine. Didn't hear from them again.
