Claiming TRS on Prescription Glasses from PHI

About to go overseas soon, just had a thought - can we claim prescription glasses which is covered by our health fund?

The receipt that I got for my glasses at specsavers says "tax invoice" and has a GST component listed. But the thing is, I used my health fund to claim (hicaps) so I didnt pay any excess.

Has anyone done this before or am I just dreaming?

Thanks.

not only are you dreaming, you're completely delirious

  • double dipping. true ozbargain spirit, but in this case, no way, you never paid anything.

  • There's no GST on prescription lenses, only the frames.

I don't see why not. Although it's fraud if you claim the gst twice.

I agree you should be able to claim it. I can't see the government would be concerned, but the PHI have clauses which state you can't claim for something if you haven't paid for it. Assuming we are talking about a maximum of what, $40? Decide whether the hassle and feeling you have done the wrong thing is worth it.

  • First question, is the invoice amount 300$ or over to be eligible for refund?. Secondly, see the receipt carefully for the total amount paid section. My invoice from OPSM states that amount paid in full via HICAPS which is a giveaway that you paid nothing. There is nothing stopping you from attempting a claim and pretend that you were ill informed about the claims process when you get caught and possibly black listed. 30$ question is…is it worth it?
