Clothing alterations - Melbourne CBD

Hi all,
Anyone get clothing altered? I need the hem let out on a few pairs of business pants, as well as the seam mended one on.
Failing that, do you know what the going rate is, so i'm aware if im getting ripped off?

A few months ago I was having a truly terrible work day and then while rushing from one meeting to another I fell and ripped my dress and my knee. I hobbled over to a nearby building because my colleague said there was a tailor in the basement. It was Deniz. She's a very old school lady, no website or anything and she only takes cash. She fixed up my dress right there and then, gave me a chair and a room to wait in, wipes for my leg and was generally just incredibly kind. I didn't have cash on me and asked to go to the ATM. She insisted very very hard that I NOT pay her as I'd obviously had a terrible day already. I clearly could afford it but she was extremely insistent. Later that day I got my partner to go back and give her the cash anyway.

She did a really good job on my dress and the price was $15. I don't know how that would compare to others but I suspect favourably (also in that moment she really could have charged me anything she wanted). Her shop fit-out is extremely bare bones (no website, fancy signage or anything).

I hope that helps! If you go to her, please feel free to let her know that she was recommended by the girl who fell and split her dress and hurt her knee.

Otherwise, I've also used the usual chain stores - Alter It in Melbourne Central and Looksmart in QV. I didn't think either were particularly cheap or expensive but they did the job. Had to haggle a bit, particularly with the QV one.

    • This is really cool! I'll be sure to check her out today! Thanks

  • That is a nice recommendation, thanks.

I got charged $56 for alterations to one business shirt ($36 for sleeves and $18 to take in the back)
    Which seems expensive…
