Port out Fee $8 from Optus

Have the Optus $50 simply with 8gb data.
Planned to switch to the Telstra freedom plus plan $30 starter pack for a month(28 days)before taking up the Optus 10gbfor $70plan with 6 months at half price
…..

Optus now tell me there is an $8 charge for porting out.

Ivenever paid any porting fees before.

Anyone come across this.?
How to get it cancelled/waived?

Tried online chat and phoned. Both said No.

  • I have the same thing on Telstra with my contract ending in 2 weeks. Seems common.

    • Better to stay prepay and no port out fees?

      • I suppose it depends on if you can take the $8 hit to save money in the long term, which is my rationale. I've got a voda sim on the way, and may just port over before my contract end date as i'll be saving over $40 a month on the new plan.

  • can you move the number to prepaid before you port it out?

    • I'm going to Telstra prepay, freedom plus and then to Amaysim

      • sorry, going to clarify what i mean

why dont you move your number to optus prepaid before you move it to telstra prepaid. this way i dont think they can claim the $8 from you if your number has a $0 prepaid balance. the downside to this is that you might be with a phone that cant do anything whilst its on optus prepaid.

        • Had to swap to the Telstra already. (or to anything else)
My new charge month starts tonight.
I'm already just now ported over to Telstra.

        • If you switch from Telstra postpaid to prepaid the $8 fee applies (Telstra now charge a port out fee also)
Optus is the same $8 fee applies if you switch from post to prepaid.

  • TPG were going to charge me $11 to port out and keep my number with another provider! - just to make a another buck i reckon.

    • Did you get it waived?

      • no i got a new number. I refused to pay

        • My Optus was postpaid, month to month sim only plan.
Wonder what happens if I refuse to pay.?

        • @albanyson: if they bill you and you never pay it they will default you and list it on your credit file.

        • +1

          @jimbobaus:

They took off part of the day that wasnt used. So was actually 7.40$.
